School Based Youth Counsellor

  • All duties included under Community Addiction Worker listed below.
  • responsible to cover two elementary schools and two High schools in Flin Flon and Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage.
  • Provide clinical sessions, alcohol and other drug intake and assessments, affected persons counselling, treatment planning, prevention education on various topics related to mental health and addiction, coping strategies and harm reduction.
  • Network and collaborate with colleagues throughout the Province of MB, being part of the Mental Health & Addictions School Based Provincial Team.
  • Increased documentation process since transition to Shared Health in April 2022.
  • Mandatory Suicide Risk Assessments as of March of 2024
  • Monthly reporting on various areas of the position from prevention and education, monthly stats to wait times.

  • Serious Injury reporting-Manitoba Advocate Children and Youth.
  • Work independently, manage a large caseload, travel between 5 locations weekly with limited supervision. Manager of Mental Health and Addictions Specialized teams is base out of Winnipeg since AFM transition to Shared Health in 2022.
  • Referrals to Compass Residential Youth treatment Center. Treatment planning and consultation with residence counselors and health professionals pre and post attendance in the program.
  • Responsible to build and maintain professional relationships with Administrators and staff at all schools within portfolio. Collaborate with schools to meet individual needs as they arise specific to Addiction and Substance use.
  • Basic computer skills to perform basic tasks. Creating spreadsheets, folders, managing personal and shared drives to keep all necessary documents organized and easy to access.
  • Attend regular team meetings, case consults with clinical specialists, and complete trainings as required.

Community Addictions Worker

  • Responsible for the delivery of AFM service to individuals from several rural communities. Including Intake and Assessments, risk assessments, treatment planning, case management and file documentation.
  • Delivery of rehabilitation programs related to alcohol, drugs and gambling with adults and youth. Working in a multi-disciplinary team context as well as independently. Collaborating with local health/social service teams and planners in the community.
  • Carry knowledge in the fields of Addiction/Substance Use, Mental Health, Trauma informed, Domestic Violence, Impacts of intergenerational Trauma such as Residential School but not limited to, Indigenous culture, spirituality, mindfulness and various other healing modalities.
  • To assess clients referred by various agencies. Completing an Alcohol and Other Drug Assessment completed using appropriate screening and assessment tools.
  • Completing referrals to in house treatment programs within the province of MB and Sk.
  • Exploration of and referral to other service agencies as part of treatment planning and case management.
  • Conducting therapeutic sessions. Displaying competency in therapeutic skills and a range of interpersonal and communication skills which enable effective involvement with clients.

  • Conducted professional, effective one on one counseling sessions addressing many complex situations including domestic violence and/or other types of abuse, addiction/substance abuse, mental health, suicidal ideations and self harm, etc.
  • Advocated for at-risk individuals often working in conjunction with RCMP, CFS, school administration/mental health, EIA, housing coordinator, and other mental health and addiction clinicians in our community.
  • Provided compassionate, non judgemental, safe spaces for vulnerable individuals aged 12 years to adult. Using a strengths based approach to empower and positively influence their well being, behaviors and decision making skills, ultimately moving them towards change.
  • Responded appropriately and effectively to crisis situations when issues arose.
  • Designed slide presentations and facilitated group sessions and workshops for community members as well as grades 5-12 students on various topics including Trauma, Domestic Violence, Attachment, parenting, Emotional & Mental Health.
  • Designed and facilitated trauma Informed Professional Development workshops to FFSD High school and elementary Staff.
  • Collaborated with WRC, community and school colleagues to organize many community and school awareness initiatives and events for our agency. Organizing and participating in many diverse cultural initiatives.

  • Was able to expand my knowledge in many capacities while sitting on many Community Committees: Hope North(Suicide Prevention), CAMP(Community Alcohol Management), FAASE(Flin Flon & Area Against Sexual Exploitation) PISN(Play It Safer Network-Harm Reduction), HUB Youth Engagement. Sitting on the above committees also allowed me to network and form many valuable connections within our community organizations and agencies.
  • Documented confidential client records, monthly and quarterly stat reports and monthly board reports.
  • Overseen a practicum student for 120 hr placement, spring of 2019. Coaching, teaching, mentoring, delegating tasks, supervising student in various roles, written reports and conducted evaluations.
  • Maintained and managed a busy schedule. Attending to 5 local schools on a weekly basis, running groups, working within WRC office when needed and with Safe Home clients as needed. Being flexible and adapting to any crisis situation at hand was essential.
  • Participated in numerous trainings and professional development opportunities on many topics relevant to this field. Some examples would be: attachment, suicide prevention, trauma, understanding anxiety, mental health, motivational interviewing, working remotely, crisis intervention, grief, many cultural teachings.
  • Completed Dr. Gabor Mate's year long professional course, Compassionate Inquiry. This program has given me the opportunity to learn from one of the worlds leading experts in the field of trauma and addiction. I am currently very connected to this international community of practitioners and continue to learn from Gabor several times a month on regular zoom meetings. The Compassionate Inquiry team continues to provide many additional trainings and access to healing modalities for their community of practitioners. The professional development is ongoing.
