Caregiver, Special Needs

Bobbi Mcelgunn
Black Diamond , Alberta
05.2021 - Current

Position ended as I moved away for school but I currently pick up hours whenever I'm home visiting family.

I worked with an individual who has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. Her biggest challenge was communication. She understood 80-85% of what is communicated to her but her communication is limited. She is mobile but her fine motor skills are weak.

During this position, I was responsible for understanding minimal vocabulary while also teaching the child sign language for words she struggled with the most. I was required to pick individual up from school, driving her to and from places, engaging with her, assisting her at horse camps, and ultimately being her friend.

Some activities we did included going to the movies, bowling, swimming, river, dog park, library, out for dinner, walks, and so fourth.

My biggest achievement in this position was seeing the smile on the child's face every time she saw me.

This job taught me to be more understanding and sympathetic towards other individuals.

Some other roles included:

  • Prepared meals and snacks for client.
  • Determined specific needs and provided most appropriate level of services for patient well-being.
  • Cleaned after meals, ran errands, and supervised during laundry
  • Built strong relationships with client to deliver emotional support and companionship.
  • Building life skills

My biggest achievement in this job position was my growth in patience with people. I also learned how important it is to react fast to situations and to always be aware of your surroundings.
