Karl Hubenig

With over 20 years of professional experience as a project manager, Mr. Hubenig is an Industrial Systems Engineer with expertise in green and brownfield projects across various industries. As a Construction/Project Manager in the Upstream and Midstream space, he has successfully collaborated with internal stakeholders such as Operations and Drilling/Completions, while also negotiating with external clients on pipeline/facility design, construction, SimOps, and IT development/implementation. His exceptional interpersonal skills and technical expertise have enabled him to execute multiple EPCM projects of varying sizes and complexity, providing valuable front-end advisement, FEED, HAZOP, detailed design, project management, and construction services in both Canadian and American jurisdictions. • History of delivering projects on time, under budget, and safely. Most recently, completed a project two months ahead of an aggressive schedule (14 months), from FEED to on-stream and under budget by 10.4% ($30.3M), TIC $291M.
• Managed the installation of two co-gen units at the Edson Gas Plant, minimizing the required shutdown time by proactively working with and engaging Operations and AESO.
• Led a project that outperformed the corporate HSE TRIF (Total Recordable Incident Frequency) target of 1.8 by achieving a TRIF of 0.24. Achieved 750,000 person-hours of lost time incident free.
• Led a lean team to work with up to 15 critical interfaces (five different engineering companies, seven different owners to either relocate or modify their existing infrastructure, three Regulators), as well as fabricators/manufacturers in Canada and the United States to bring the project through FEED to on-stream, while minimizing the downtime of their customers and interruption to service.
• Worked with all levels of Government and Stakeholders to streamline the regulatory approval process by proactively explaining the project, understanding their requirements, providing and updating information prior to key milestones.
• Created a team environment by involving and engaging all stakeholders early and throughout the project to contribute and sign off on relevant decisions to minimize re-work and scope changes.

Providing input for the construction execution, regulatory/permit support, construction input into design, and coordinating utilities for the project. Liaising with residents, farmers, county, towns and government agencies.
• Project Manager - Consultant, Streamline Inspection, NDE Inspection, 08/21, 11/21, Onsite project manager for an NDE company to coordinate the various inspection activities to provide information to the owner group to determine the scope and costs associated with the start-up of a heavy oil upgrader. Wrote inspection packages, reviewed reports, and coordinated information between various site contractors.
• Crude by Rail - Consultant, Serafina Energy, Crude by Rail, 11/19, 03/21, Responsible for the DBM, Detailed Engineering, HAZOP, IT, operating philosophies, procurement plans, and construction execution plans for a 25,000-bpd truck trans-loading to crude by rail facility. The facility included three 105-car unit train tracks, double side 10 spot rail loading rack, and rail car tracking and automated loading software.
• Senior Project Manager, KBR, Long Lake Upgrader Re-start, 05/19, 10/19, Onsite project manager working with an international EPC (KBR) to inspect an oil upgrader to determine requirements to restart the upgrader after a fire and explosion. The information was used to refine a tabletop/document review that generated a class 5 cost estimate to a class 4 cost estimate and provide input on the scope of work for the next phase (define phase).
• Senior Project Manager, EAVOR, Geothermal Closed Loop Project, 05/18, 10/19, Responsible for the FEED, Detailed Engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of a closed-loop test facility for a closed-loop geothermal project that includes pipeline and surface facilities.
• Senior Project Manager, Inter Pipeline Fund, ROF Butane Truck and Rail Loading, 05/18, 05/19, Detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning support working through the general contractor, AECON. The facility design included a butane dryer, two butane storage bullets, three loading pumps: one truck and two rails, a new MCC, modified site grading, and existing pipe racks.
• Senior Project Manager, KEYERA, Cynthia Power Generation Plant, 04/19, 04/19, Assisted in the design of an HDD and pipeline and construction execution to support a cogeneration project at an existing facility. The key challenge was to ensure that the gas turbine has the capability to handle the varying gas compositions produced by the associated gas plants.
• Senior Project Manager, ALTAGAS, Townsend and Alton Cavern Programs, 10/15, 02/17, Responsible for EPCM liaison, program planning, and construction. During the project estimating phase, responsible to deliver project checklists, DBMs, AFE, and, man-hour estimates to meet client requirements and approval. During the execution phase, managed all project deliverables including project controls, applications, engineering design, purchasing, expediting, and construction. Also included: plant commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, and optimization.
• Senior Project Manager, Kinder Morgan Canada, Edmonton South Oil Rail Facility, 04/13, 06/15, Project included DBM, FEED, HAZOP, and detailed design, construction, and commissioning support of a 259,000 bbl/d oil by rail terminal in Strathcona County. This project included coordinating the scope of 3 different engineering companies, 5 pipeline owner companies, the County of Strathcona and the various regulatory bodies (AER, SRD, and Strathcona County), CN and CP rail, and Atco Power.
• Senior Project Manager, URS Flint, CNRL Horizon, 07/12, 04/13, Led projects to construct an eight-kilometer, 18” NRU surface pipeline and upgrades to associated electrical systems in the CNRL Horizon Oil Sands site. My efforts included all associated electrical and mechanical work in an operating facility.
• Senior Project Manager, AMEC BDR, Sunshine Oil Sands – West Els, 01/12, 07/12, Recruited to design and construct a SAGD CPU and associated production facilities including steam/production well pairs and water source wells. Managed all EPC aspects of the central processing facility, gathering lines, underground pipelines, and regulatory requirements.
• Project Manager, Talisman Energy, Various Programs, 08/96, 12/09, Responsible for EPCM liaison, business development, and program planning and execution. Managed all project deliverables including Project Controls, applications, engineering design, purchasing, and expediting.
