I have contributed to my community through a number of volunteer positions. For example, the President of my daughter's netball organization while we lived in Perth, Western Australia. In this role, I was responsible for over 150 children, ranging from 6 to 14 years old. The netball organization was part of my daughter's elementary school, Currambine Catholic School. I loved seeing the kids excel to the best of their abilities and help them achieve their goals. The many interactions and communications with the parents, coaches and other organizations was chaotic but fun. I have never played netball before in my life. I have never heard of it until I arrived in Australia and my daughter started playing.
I have produced a program for the OSAP Office at St. Lawrence College after my manager came to me, asking me if I could code and conduct an application system for them to use for their application. I accepted the challenge. They still use it today but modified by their IT and programmer. After 1.5 years in the Computer Programmer Analyst program, it is amazing what I was able to do. The project was successful because I listened closely to their wants, needs and concerns. I implemented my soft skills with my knowledge and created an application ready to be published for the OSAP Office.
Working with Walt Disney World on land and on the cruise-line was where I learned excellent customer service skills and how to follow rules in an accurate manner. Disney is the military of customer service. I was hired to play a role as a Cultural Representative of Canada. It was a pleasure representing Canada at the showcase center at EPCOT and onboard the Magic Cruise ship.
I have volunteered my time with my colleague Colette Steer, during the Three Minute Thesis Competitions and other events at Queen's University since 2016. I am enjoying meeting and getting to know our SGSPA students. I also enjoy meeting the graduate assistants and faculties.
