Clinical Nurse Extern

Labour and Delivery (15th Floor) - At Mount Sinai Hospital, my role is to support the Labour and Delivery (15th floor), alongside the Antenatal and Triage units as a Clinical Nurse Extern. Through this role, I have been able to support my
learning journey and the staff on the unit and provide patient-centered care.

  • I support surgical services such as C-sections, both emergent and planned. I am able to calculate blood loss at the end of the delivery process. I provide skin-to-skin education and surveillance for parents in the OR. I help in the preparation of parents for surgery, and supporting the team as a whole.
  • I assist in the completion of assessments such as vital signs as needed for the baby and mother, critical congenital heart disease screening, weights and measurements, and postpartum care as needed.
  • I contribute to the discharge process through providing health teaching, transportation of parent and child to postpartum, and restocking rooms.
  • I complete monitoring and rounding of patients and nurses, including assisting with deliveries, and gathering supplies.
  • I help perform tasks and duties for patients including bedside safety checks, daily weights, oral care, personal hygiene, baby baths, stocked Labour and Delivery carts and birthing rooms, prepared Operating Room with proper supplies for Cesarean sections, lab specimen transport and measurement of urinal outputs after Cesarean sections.
  • I participate in transfer of accountability, assist with pressure injury prevention strategies, applied dressings as delegated by supervising nurse, falls risk assessment, assisted with fall prevention strategies, obtained and documented vital signs.
