Remains calm under pressure and can handle difficult patients. Knowledgeable in anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. Constantly looking for new learning opportunities to improve. Develops trusting relationships with patients and coworkers.
I have had multiple placements during my time in nursing school allowing me to see a diverse population of patients.
Term 4
My first experience with patient care was in term 4 of my nursing program, which was in a long-term care facility. River View long-term care was my first experience providing care to patients and working as a healthcare aid. This experience helped build my foundational knowledge of basic assessments and care that is provided to all patients. It also allowed me to gain knowledge on care plans and the importance of the care regimen for patient outcomes. I have carried all of the skills gained at this placement through my nursing practice.
Term 5
I was placed in Geriatric Rehabilitation and the Psychiatric unit. Geriatrics was my first placement in a hospital. It is where I got to provide basic care and assessments on multiple patients. I performed dressing changes, staple removal, bed baths, and learned lots of terminology used in the hospitals. This allowed me to solidify my basic knowledge and got me accustomed to the time management skills needed in hospital settings.
During the second half of term 5, I was placed on the psychiatric unit. This allowed me to gain further confidence in the communication skills that I practiced in term 3. Working with psychiatric patients allowed me to face uncomfortable situations, which has made me a better communicator. It also provided the opportunity for me to give lots of IM and PO medications. This was where I gained basic knowledge of medications and the administration precautions involved.
Term 6
I was on the Medical surgical unit for the entirety of term 6. Med surge is where I took the biggest step in my learning. I was in this unit for the entirety of term 6 and was exposed to many different situations. Med surge is where I began giving lots of IV, PO, IM, and SC medications. I performed complex dressing changes, catheter removals, post-surgery vital signs, and many assessments with which I became very familiar. It was during this term that I took all the skills I have learned from the past 3 years and applied them to my practice. This experience gave me a better understanding of my role as a nurse and has made me confident in my ability.
Term 7
I spent term 7 in Lacombe Alberta. I was in the emergency room there and was able to participate in tons of new experiences. I was exposed to ACLS, PALS, and trauma training, which gave me a strong foundation to build upon. This placement allowed me to become comfortable with all my skills and abilities and served as a great place to learn due to the high volume of diverse patients. I worked alongside physicians and developed independence in my ability.
Term 8
This was my final preceptorship, which I spent in Shaunavon doing ER and Acute care. During my final preceptorship, I was able to fine-tune all of my previously learned skills and knowledge. I actively looked for learning opportunities every shift and was able to become fully independent. I became confident in all of my skills and always made sure I was learning something new every day. This was also where I started using more critical thinking when assessing and evaluating patients. I also developed strong communication skills with co-workers and physicians involving abnormal findings and patient progress.
Monitored and provided safety to swimmers at the Shaunavon swimming pool. Enforced rules and regulations of the facility. Learned first responder skills including First Aid and CPR. Responded to adverse situations occurring at the facility.
Applying for a job as a new registered nurse. Hoping to gain skills and knowledge involved in emergency and acute care nursing. I believe my skills in patient care, communication, and overall knowledge are strong traits needed for this position.
