Beginning in my high school years, I always had a passion for developing my skills as an individual and increasing my positive impact on my community. Using the work opportunities which were available to me I learned valuable skills and improved my knowledge and perspectives on the world around me.
While volunteering with the MLA of the Notre Dame constituency, I gained access to valuable insights and perspectives within the community. Through the following factors, I enriched my knowledge of issues around me and helped develop a holistic approach to understanding the issues at hand. Furthermore, my exposure to the community allowed me to build my social and interpersonal skills whilst granting me access to valuable connections.
My experiences as a bookkeeper and a legal assistant further improved my interpersonal skills and broadened my involvement within my community. From speaking with clients to helping me gain the skills to participate in public debate. Working in a law office helped me gain the confidence and skills necessary to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Moreover, due to the often unforgiving nature of the law and taxes, I developed skills and perspectives that I believe would be useful to a research assistant. I am well versed in computer applications and the skills that are expected in an office. I am used to legal language, heavy reading, and the accurate collection and processing of various forms of quantitative and qualitative data. Furthermore, I was trained to be precise, critical, and analytical with my handling of files and information due to the heavy ramifications that came from even a single error.
My education at the University of Manitoba especially in my first and second year has also broadened my knowledge and skills. Through my classes, I was able to learn about the basic forms of research and the ethical considerations that would often accompany them. My experiences in classes like sociology, anthropology, and economics also allow me to employ a broad range of disciplines in understanding, collecting, and analyzing data.
By employing the various skills and perspectives I have earned over my career as a student I wish to further my horizons, skills, and perspectives through the GPE student researcher assistantship program. Within this program, I wish to develop my skills, knowledge, and perspectives whilst assisting with research that may be of great benefit to my community.
