Unfortunately, this population is also very likely to experience homelessness, incarceration, abuse and neglect. Community Living Toronto has a well-respected reputation for fostering inclusive communities by supporting the rights and choices of people with an intellectual disability. As an advocate for the fair treatment and abundant support for persons with developmental disabilities, I have worked to address these issues and have accumulated over 6 years of experience supporting individuals with an intellectual disability and their families. You may notice in my resume that I have been employed as a respite worker for the last 6 years. In this position, I have supported individuals who are at risk, who face social isolation, homelessness, precarious housing, trauma, violence, discrimination, substance use, or mental health challenge in the following ways:
  • Assisting clients to take their medication and logging results to ensure proper management and regimentation
  • Modelling and promoting a healthy lifestyle
  • Maintaining a safe work environment and living conditions for clients
  • Assisting to prevent and deescalate crisis situations with clients
  • Developing and implementing person-directed plans
  • Providing supportive counselling and companionship to assist clients with their relationships and mood regulation
