Julia Dereniwsky

• Working as a summer student in the Large Animal Clinic at the Veterinary, at the WCVM
• Working with technicians, interns, residents and clinicians to care for patients and help carry out their treatments
• Assist in procedures and emergencies, and observe new skills in medicine and surgery
• Other duties include stocking, ordering, cleaning stalls

• Representing VCA Canada with the assistance of a Senior VCA Canada student ambassador during events at my university and during career fairs
• Sharing VCA Canada opportunities and programs with fellow veterinary students, as well as setting up for any events put on by VCA Canada.

• Assisting Dr John Ellis and Dr Sheryl Gow with their research for vaccine production with dairy calves at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
• Using practical skills on a daily basis to obtain samples from the calves once they have been challenged with BRSV; which included restraint and haltering, blood draws, physical exams, nasal swabs, aortic blood gases, euthanasia.

The veterinary assisting rotation:

• experiencing day to day appointments and cases involved with general equine practice, both in clinic and ambulatory.
• Assisted the veterinarian with handling horses, running diagnostic equipment and lab samples, collecting blood samples, physical exams, administering medication or sedation
• In charge of in-clinic patient treatments and care
• Taking care of patients in the isolation ward and in charge of their husbandry and treatments

The reproduction rotation:

• Assisted with the management of the recipient mare herd; vaccination, pregnancy checks with ultrasound, administering medication orally and intrauterine
• Monitored in clinic foaling mares and assisting with neonatal foal care.
• Responsible for daily medications for all repro mares, including oral, intramuscular, intravenous and intrauterine medications
• Assisting with embryo transfers and pregnancy checks

• Animal care and husbandry tasks with a wide variety of colony and research animals (both large and small animals)
• Completing maintenance and labor tasks to help maintain the facility and certain areas such as paddocks in working order
• Technical and medical assistance with lab animals and research projects.

• Assisting clients with check-ins, discharge notes and medications post surgery or procedure, helping prep rooms for appointments, offering assistance to veterinarians; restraining animals, helping with appointments
• Dealing with cash-outs for the clinic, and payments by clients post appointment
• Calling clients to ask about: post procedure check up on pet, special food orders, medication refills.

• Assisting Dr John Harding and his research group on necropsy’s with pregnant sows
• Using technical and surgical skills to obtain samples from different body systems in the animals to be used to help observe effects of virus on fetal development during gestation.

• Monitoring and reporting metabolic criteria, such as heart rate, and respiratory rate for the endurance horses under the supervision of veterinarians.
