Large Animal Student Assistant

  • Working as a summer student in the Large Animal Clinic at the Veterinary, at the WCVM
  • Working with technicians, interns, residents and clinicians to care for patients and help carry out their treatments
  • Assist in procedures and emergencies, and observe new skills in medicine and surgery
  • Other duties include stocking, ordering, cleaning stalls

Student Ambassador for WCVM

  • Assisting Dr John Ellis and Dr Sheryl Gow with their research for vaccine production with dairy calves at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine
  • Using practical skills on a daily basis to obtain samples from the calves once they have been challenged with BRSV; which included restraint and haltering, blood draws, physical exams, nasal swabs, aortic blood gases, euthanasia.

Veterinary Summer Student

  • experiencing day to day appointments and cases involved with general equine practice, both in clinic and ambulatory.
  • Assisted the veterinarian with handling horses, running diagnostic equipment and lab samples, collecting blood samples, physical exams, administering medication or sedation
  • In charge of in-clinic patient treatments and care
  • Taking care of patients in the isolation ward and in charge of their husbandry and treatments

The reproduction rotation:

  • Assisted with the management of the recipient mare herd; vaccination, pregnancy checks with ultrasound, administering medication orally and intrauterine
  • Monitored in clinic foaling mares and assisting with neonatal foal care.
  • Responsible for daily medications for all repro mares, including oral, intramuscular, intravenous and intrauterine medications
  • Assisting with embryo transfers and pregnancy checks
