The Safeguards Officer is a nuclear professional, responsible as the program owner for the Nuclear Safeguards Program at Point Lepreau G.S., which is directly tied to the Station Operating License.
The Safeguards program is a series of controls and fissionable and fertile substances accounting activities that meet international non-proliferation treaty obligations to prevent fissionable and fertile substances from being used and/or diverted for nuclear weapons production
The Safeguards Officer is responsible for the stations' adherence to the Integrated Safeguards Act for CANDU stations in Canada , the Additional Protocol Agreement, and all International treaties pertaining to nuclear, his duties include, but are not limited to, being responsible for the accounting and control of all fissionable and fertile substances on site ,he is the sole point of contact for Safeguards activities between NB Power, the Federal Regulator;(Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission), and the United Nations Nuclear Inspection division the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Founding member of the Canadian Nuclear Safeguards Task Force Committee. The role of this Committee is to assemble a committee of Safeguards representatives from CANDU facilities across Canada, formed to represent Safeguards concerns and issues via a collaborative platform where members can discuss solutions to common issues and create approaches to Nuclear Safeguards implementation. After which the committee shall present the identified issues and concerns to the CNSC and the IAEA, in order to facilitate positive agreements and regulations that impact Safeguards operations in Canadian nuclear facilities.
