The Rainbow Lake Learning Store was a branch of the Fort Vermilion Outreach program. I was a certified teacher, hired as an Educational Assistant, who performed the duties of an EA/teacher/secretary/ guidance counselor. An administrator or teacher came once a week to provide extra supports. My duties were as follows:

  • Provided one-on-one instruction in almost all subject areas.
  • Worked specifically with grade 10-12 students who were at risk and/or had left the regular classroom. Many were struggling with behavioral, emotional or learning difficulties.
  • Worked closely with Indigenous students who were not experiencing success in the regular classroom due to gaps in learning, inability to keep up with the pace of the classroom, and difficulty getting to school because of distance and bussing issues.
  • Provided individualized instruction, positive reinforcement, course completion planning, and graduation and career path counseling.
  • Arranged for students to have extra supports such as scribes, audio and visual aids, and mental health supports.
  • Created a warm, welcoming school environment to facilitate student attendance and success.
  • Kept digital and paper records of all student progress, exams, completed materials, and grades.
  • Contacted students and parents regularly to keep everyone updated on each student's progress.
  • Managed the filing system, invigilated exams for outside students and provincial departmental exams, and coordinated exam schedules.
