In my time with the Forest Service as a firefighter, I’ve had the opportunity to take part in prescribed fire operations, as well as fuel treatments. I have actively participated in many phases of the process. As a lead and senior firefighter, I have laid out and marked units, worked with fuels specialists to determine the appropriate fuels treatments necessary, collected and examined data to develop prescribed fire burns plans, assisted in developing prescribed fire burn plans, and have led crew members in thinning units where chipping and prescribed fire have been selected as the fuel treatment. I have also led crews in the construction on hand line and setting up hose lays and portable water sources to prepare units for prescribed fire. I have completed treatments in a variety of fuel types and geographical areas in Regions 1,4,and 5. I have taken part in prescribed fire operations spanning from Type 3 pile burning to Type 2 understory burns with a variety of ignition sources ranging from leading ignition teams hand lighting with drip torches to aerial ignitions with heli torches and “ping pong ball” machines. As a senior firefighter, I coordinate with our urban lot staff and our timber staff to acquire project work for fuels treatments and am responsible for the tracking and timely completion of the projects. I served as unit armorer from May 2000 to May 2001. Responsible for the maintenance, security and upkeep of approximately $1,000,000 of unit weapons, laser aiming devices, and night vision equipment as well as other high dollar value items located in the unit arms room. I was commended by the Ft. Lewis Provost Marshall’s Office for exceeding regulation standards for security during a formal inspection by Forces Command US Army.
Promoted to Sergeant in June 2001 and served as Team Leader of a four man Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT) fire team capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 96 hours by land, sea, or air. I also served as Squad Leader responsible for 2 Fire Teams. I was responsible for the combat readiness, physical fitness, training, discipline, health, welfare, and morale of my team/ squad, as well as the well being of their families while maintaining and accounting for over $250,000 of sensitive equipment. I was Air Assault qualified, so I routinely participated in helicopter operations to include insertions and extractions using fast rope and rappelling for various patrols and missions, as well as sling load operations used to deliver external cargo loads. I routinely advised my squad leader/ platoon leader in mission planning and the tactical employment of the squad. My team/ squad and I consistently scored expert with our assigned weapons day and night and during close quarters marksmanship and close quarters combat. I was chosen above my peers to instruct battalion level weapons training.
I was assigned to be a vehicle commander in July 2002 where I was responsible for the maintenance and employment of a $2,500,000 Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle. Additional responsibilities included the training of my assigned driver and the integration of a 9 personnel squad. I was selected as Non Commissioned Officer in Charge of New Equipment Training and subsequent deployment to the Yakima Training Center, Washington, for the training of additional Stryker Vehicle Commanders and their drivers.
I was then chosen before my peers to command the headquarters Stryker where I was responsible for maintaining and operating secure communications and sending reports to higher command elements, as well as the maintenance of the vehicles, and routinely advised the Platoon Leader on strategic and tactical maneuvers of the vehicles.
I was deployed to Iraq in November 2003 as Advanced Party to ensure safe arrival of my platoon’s vehicles and equipment.
