• Working as part of a multidisciplinary team comprised of nurses, LPNs, technicians, and unit clerks.
• Admitting patients pre-operatively, and preparing patient for surgical procedure in a timely manner to best ensure OR schedules are not delayed (may include but not limited to: chart review, IV insertion, medication administration, teaching related to postoperative care/considerations, addressing any outstanding patient questions or concerns, arranging interpreter services if required)
• Receiving patients from PACU; conducting a focused assessment and monitoring surgical wounds, vital signs, safety assessment, pain control, CSMT, neurovitals, IV's, foley catheters, CBI, JP drains, etc.
• Advising patients and caregivers of proper wound management, discharge plan objectives, safe medication use, and disease management. Providing necessary support to ensure patient and caregiver understand teaching reviewed.
• Occasionally collaborating with Surgeons and/or Anesthesiologists regarding any pre or post-operative questions/concerns
• Documenting treatments delivered, medications and IVs administered, discharge instructions, and follow-up care for a large variety of surgical procedures (general surgery, plastics, gynecology, orthopedic, etc.)
• Working as a team and in a timely manner to ensure patients are prepared for discharge after their minimum required stay and when discharge criteria has been met
• Conducting phone calls to patients at least one day post-operatively to assess their experience, pain control, and any complications that may have occurred since discharge; offering guidance and support as necessary

Preparing patients for their operative journey.

• Pre-surgical screening: Interviewing patients via telephone to review/update medical history and assessing relevant information accessible via Netcare (e.g. medication profile, lab work, consults, previous operative procedures, etc.); booking Internal Medicine and/or Anesthesia consults pre-operatively based on specific guidelines
• Providing patient teaching, in person and virtual, regarding all aspects of operative journey: pre and post-operative care and expectations; how to prepare and importance in doing so; ERAS guidelines when applicable, addressing all outstanding questions/concerns
• Ensuring necessary work up is completed and/or booked
• Reviewing/updating patient's medication profile and vital signs in clinic prior to consults
• Reviewing Internal Medicine and Anesthesiologist consults and occasionally collaborating with physicians in clinic
• Ensuring patient receives an in-person consult with Occupational Therapist or Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Clinician when relevant

• Managed patients recovering from medical or surgical procedures
• Several years of experience with charge nurse orientation on unit
• Oversaw delivery of care for patients, provided direct care, delegated nursing assignments, participated in rounds with residents/surgeons, bed meetings, multidisciplinary morning rounds, and supervised team comprised of RN's, LPNs, HCA's, and unit clerks.
• Offered exceptional care and support to individuals recovering from acute incidents and dealing with chronic conditions.
• Advised patients and caregivers of proper wound management, discharge plan objectives, safe medication use, and disease management.
• Occasionally provided skilled, timely and level-headed emergency response to critically-ill patients; maintained care until transferred patient to ICU/CCU
• Used first-hand knowledge and clinical expertise to advocate for patients under care
• Communicated with multidisciplinary healthcare team members to plan, implement and enhance treatment strategies.
