Responsibilities

• Develop pre-operative/post-operative plan of care that is individualized for the adult or elderly patient reflecting collaboration with other members of the health care team
• Discuss the treatment/management of the condition with patients and relatives as part of ongoing education of patients and their families
• Ensure that the planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care plans addresses the changing needs of the patient and also promote practice that is sensitive to the needs of patients from multi-cultural backgrounds
• Supervise nurses and other staff in the ward and assess their training needs to upgrade their skills and iinvestigate incident reports and counsel staff accordingly
• Change wound dressings, inserting urethral catheters and start intravenous infusions
• Care for clients with drainage tubes, urethral catheters, intravenous lines and colostomy/ileostomy bags
• Prepare, administer, record prescribed medications and monitor patients for adverse reactions and initiates emergency resuscitation measures according to adult resuscitation protocols and ensure the availability of the right skill mix for the delivery of nursing care during every shift
• Delegate, supervise and monitor auxiliary personnel in the performance of assigned nursing tasks
• Participate in clinical meetings, morbidity/mortality meetings and staff durbars
