  • Full-time employed in small low-income, overpopulated township municipality clinic.
  • Currently placed in Antenatal Stream and my duties are:
  • Assesment and diagnosis of pregnancy; booking first ANC visits and follow-up subsequent visits.
  • Provide primary full-course care to women and their babies during pregnancy i.e
  • Physical examination; giving relevant vaccinations; screening and diagnosis tests to monitor mothers and their babies.
  • Referrals to higher level healthcare institutions and/or specialists as required according to set practice guidelines and protocols.
  • Prescribing and dispensing medication for minor ailments in pregnancy.
  • Assisting Women's Health stream with pap smears, and contraceptive care and treatment of sexually transmitted infections.

  • Working fulltime in this Quaternary level and tertiary hospital which is also one of the largest in the province with 1102 beds. I was rotating between Maternity High Care, Cesarean Theater and the Labor Ward.
  • My duties included admission of patients from Admissions/Casualty who were in active phase of labor.
  • Maternal and fetal well-being monitoring during progress of labour, delivery and pueperial (4th stage of labour).
  • Also included there, was attending to, monitoring, assisting and facilitating in obstetric emergencies.
  • Attending to cesarean births in theater as 'the baby-catcher'; neonatal resuscitation, monitoring and providing immediate care of the neonate.
  • Nursing patients with complications of pregnancy (antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum) in the high-care where nurse-patient ratio is 1:2.
  • Liasing with the on-call obstetrician and all other members of the MDT.
  • General Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive, integrated and optimal nursing care as a member of the MDT according to identified patient needs based on scientific fic principles and within professional/legal framework.
  • Utilise resources effectively (both human and material) through proper record keeping and reporting.
  • Participate in training, research, mentoring and educating junior staff members and students.
  • Be actively involved in supporting nursing services such as team building and championship activities.
  • Maintain professional growth and self development by ensuring quality improvement and seeking learning opportunities.
  • I would do overtime in the Maternity Admissions/Casualty and the Ante-natal Ward
  • Duties involve: Triaging of all pregnant women presenting at admissions.

  • Fetal and maternal monitoring of high-risk antenatal pts i.e during IOL, tocolysis and those with medical conditions ons (e.g diabetes, anaemia, hypertensive etc).
