  • I have been working as a casual LPN for 2.5 years on the medical and surgical floors at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital
  • This experience thus far has allowed me to improve my time management, interact with patients and staff relationally, learn the importance of delegating tasks where appropriate and practice a variety of assessments
  • I have also learned to work within an interdisciplinary team, which includes physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, specialists, and care aids, to name a few.

  • For my 3rd year community placement, I was placed at a maternity clinic in Creston, BC
  • Skills I was able to practice during this placement included fundal height measurements, fetal heart rate with a Doppler machine, newborn and infant measurements (head circumference, length, weight), and overall health assessments of women and babies
  • I also learned how to discuss complex topics relationally. These topics included therapeutic and spontaneous abortions and child loss during birth.

  • During my second year, I spent one semester on the surgical unit and two semesters on the medical unit for clinical experience
  • During both these placements, I learned valuable information about lab values related to a client's disease or illness
  • I also had the ability to improve my time management, relational communication skills and interprofessional collaboration with peers.
