Research

  • Post-Doctoral, Inhibition of antigen presentation by the Glycine-Alanine Repeat (GAR) domain of Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen 1 (EBNA1): characterisation and application, Study the minimal requirements for GAR-mediated inhibition of proteasomal degradation of EBNA1 and its recognition by CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and the potential use of the GAR domain to function as a 'stealth' gene to silence the immune response against proteins of value in Gene- and Immune- Therapy.
  • PhD Degree, Cellular Immune Response in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection, Detect and quantify HCV-specific T cell responses in PBMCs of HCV patients and search for a possible relationship between the magnitude and specificity of T cell response and the outcome of infection. This involved the application of intracellular cytokine staining (flow cytometry based) in the detection and evaluation of HCV-responsive CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, the use & culture of dendritic cells, molecular and immunological techniques in addition to Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic cell transfection with protein, DNA and RNA.
  • MSc Degree, Compartmentalization of Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) in the Different Populations of PBMCs of Chronically Infected Patients, Investigate whether HCV has extra-hepatic tropism and the ability to infect peripheral blood mononuclear cell populations. The presence of HCV viral proteins and RNA in various populations of PBMC was investigated using flow-cytometry and nested rt-PCR. In addition, HCV quasi-species in several compartments (i.e. different cell types and plasma) were studied using Single Strand Conformation Polymorphism (SSCP).
