Gurman Kaur Johal

A third-year undergraduate student at the University of Alberta, majoring in biology and minoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. Aiming towards my dream of working in the medical field, all while expanding my knowledge on the fundamental part of medicine; people, by gaining work experience.

• Volunteer hours at Millwood Shepherd's Care Nursing Home
  ○ Assisted residents with recreational activities such as reading, gardening, family visitations and daily exercises.
  ○ Assisted with transportation of wheelchair throughout the building.
  ○ Worked in the gift shop; providing customer service and head cashier.

• Dancer for Punjabi Heritage and Folk
  ○ Bhangra and Giddha
  ○ Volunteer at annual summer dance camp and help organize many showcases, recitals and community events.
  ○ Traveled around Canada for competitions

• Volunteered in Ghana (West Africa)
  ○ Taught English to Grade 5 and Science to Grade 9
  ○ Conducted malaria tests and distributed anti-malaria pills for positive individuals
  ○ Provided basic wound care in villages that lack medical support

• Member of Science FUNdamental
  ○ Go to elementary classrooms and present multiple science demos to engage students in active learning
  ○ Build a positive interaction between students and learning
