Job Description

  • Navigational Duties: Planning and overseeing the ship's route and ensuring safe navigation.
    Using navigational equipment and charts to plot the ship's course.
    Monitoring weather conditions and making adjustments to the route as necessary.
    Supervising the loading, stowing, securing, and unloading of cargo to maintain ship stability.
  • Safety and Security: Ensuring compliance with international and national maritime regulations related to safety, pollution prevention, and security.
    Conducting safety drills and training crew members in emergency procedures.
    Inspecting safety equipment and ensuring it is maintained and ready for use.
  • Management and supervision: Supervising the work of deck crew members, including ratings and able seamen.
    Assigning duties and responsibilities to the deck crew and ensuring they are carried out efficiently.
    Maintaining discipline and morale among the deck crew.
  • Communication and documentation: Communicating with the captain, other officers, and crew members to coordinate activities and ensure smooth operation of the ship.
    Maintaining logs, records, and reports related to navigational activities, cargo handling, and safety procedures.
    Using communication equipment effectively, including radios and satellite systems.
  • Maintenance and Inspection: Conducting regular inspections of the ship's hull, machinery, equipment, and cargo to ensure they meet safety standards.
    Overseeing maintenance and repair work on deck equipment and structures.
    Monitoring fuel and water levels and ensuring proper storage and use.
  • Emergency Response: Responding to emergencies such as medical incidents, fires, and accidents.
    Implementing emergency procedures and coordinating with other crew members and external authorities as necessary.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Implementing environmental protection measures to prevent pollution of the marine environment.
    Ensuring compliance with regulations regarding ballast water management, garbage disposal, and emissions.
  • Training and Development: Training junior officers and deck crew members in navigation techniques, safety procedures, and emergency responses.
    Keeping abreast of new technologies and regulations in the maritime industry through professional development.
