The poem was very well written, but going out and explaining it was rough for me at first. Being the last performer of my class was rough for me because i started to become nervous too quick. I didn't want people to know I was nervous so as I went in front of the crowd, I engaged with the audience by using a joke. The joke got me a couple of laughs and it caught the heads of every student there, my hands started getting sweaty but I was sure to not let the crowd see I was nervous. I explained to the room that they're performances were very enlightening and to applaud themselves as it takes a lot of courage to go in front of a room of people and speak their mind.
As I started with my poem, I realized that It was not about the people in the room anymore, it was just me and the microphone. The more I started talking, the more heads started to rise from behind their peers chairs. The more I started speaking, the room started to just feel like a room of nobody, like I was practicing the speech alone all over again. More and more people were getting interested, and I just entered that "flow state", I felt untouchable, like the room and world was mine. Rhymes so cold had people blowing out cold air from nothing. When I finished my poem, the whole room applauded and people were standing and cheering like I had just won an NBA finals.
After my presentation, multiple people came to me after and gave me props/congrats on my work. A lot of congrats around the room really boosted my mood for the rest of that event and soon awards would be announced. The first award was for the most engaging performance, and the woman called my name, nothing but shouts and cheers filled the room and I couldn't do anything but smile wile walking towards the front of the room to receive my award sheet, along with a gift card to subway. I left that room with a smile on my face, and for the rest of that day I received nothing but compliments and props which made that day one of a kind.
