The Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children is a twelve-month education and training program in all aspects of pediatric anesthesia. The clinical and didactic education curriculum includes pediatric pain management and perioperative anesthetic care for neonates, infants, children, and adolescents, both in the operating room and in satellite locations.
Fellows participate in departmental educational activities, and clinical and/or basic science research. Relevant to their level of training and experience, they also assume graduated independence and responsibility for supervising residents assigned to the service.
Since I joined Sidra in 2019, my career has taken a new path. Sidra Medicine is a DiNovo tertiary children’s and women’s hospital with a 450-bed capacity, currently open with 250 beds. I worked in the pediatric division of anesthesia. We have all specialties, and I worked independently under the supervision of our pediatric anesthesia attendings. I was involved in all kinds of pediatric surgeries and procedures, except for cardiac, which is covered by our cardiac pediatric anesthesia team. We perform bronchoscopies, endoscopies, and special procedures, like LP and BMA, as well. We do more than 9,000 cases per year; among these, we perform kidney transplants and plan a way for liver transplants. We cover pain services, either acute or chronic, and conduct follow-up pain rounds as well.
During my two years at Farah Medical Campus, I used to deliver anesthesia independently for different aspects and specialties, mainly combined spinal/epidural for TKR and THR in our orthopedic OR, bariatric surgeries for morbidly obese patients in general surgery. We used to run the ophthalmology room once a week for children, besides other different specialties: plastic, urology, neurosurgery, endoscopy, cardiac, and interventional radiology.
During my four years of comprehensive training, I was exposed to all specialties: general surgeries, urology, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiac and thoracic, plastic, ENT, neurosurgery, and maxillofacial. In our second year, we do an ICU rotation for four months, and again in the fourth year. My training program is well-established, and residents experience the full spectrum of surgical procedures during their training; they gain the confidence and skills they need for their future careers.
