California Conservation Corps July 8th 2024 - Present Type 1 Wildland Firefighter// Corpsmember Fresno, CA
40 hrs per week
Firefighting:
Perform project work including, fire fuel reduction, brush clearing, thinning, invasive species removal, chipping, firewood, hazard tree removal, bucking, felling trees, and stumping.
Cut and removed brush, small trees, and other vegetation to reduce hazardous wildland fuels and create a fuel break
Perform various natural resource management tasks, including invasive species removal, landscape beautification, and tree planting
Conducted trail construction and rehabilitation, including basic carpentry to build structures such as stairs and bridges
Placed drainage and natural sloping into trails to minimize seasonal erosion issues
Operate a variety of Chippers to reduce small trees and other vegetation into spreadable chips used to naturalize worksites
Working cohesively with various agencies and crews including CAL FIRE, NPS, USFS
Leading logistic issues for crew members such as replacing equipment and tools especially related to state of California vehicles
Going on First Responder Emergencies
Working at Base camp handling Food, Utilities, Maintenance, and Base Camp Projects.
Conduct initial and indirect wildland firefighting on Type 1 wildland hand crew
Cut direct and indirect fire line using various tools such as Chainsaw, Pulaski, Rogue, McLeod, and back pump
Use firing devices, such as drip torches and fusees during firing operations
Mop-up and patrol burned areas after fires to locate and eliminate hot spots that may restart
Inspect, clean and repair fire hose and equipment, also sharpen fire tools
Perform arduous and physically demanding work in all weather conditions including extreme heat
Employ M.I.S.T. (minimal impact suppression tactics) in environmentally sensitive areas
Conduct suppression repair and rehab tactics
Practice and utilize the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders
Assist incidents using the 18 Watch Out Situations
Cut hand line and clear out defensible space to protect structures during wildfire
Fuel Load Reduction and Modification:
Safely and efficiently cut, remove, and chip vegetative fuel
Pile and ignite vegetative material, during projects
Conduct controlled burn operations
Create fuel breaks throughout the forest
Hand and Power Tools:
Maintain equipment and tools daily to maintain peak working condition safely and efficiently use drip torch, chainsaw, Pulaski, Rogue, McLeod
Familiar with seven safety features of chainsaw (Throttle control, On/Off switch, chain break, inertia break, spark arrestor, chain catcher, handguard)
Other:
Perform semi-skilled construction work
Clean and maintain the center facilities by mopping, sweeping, cleaning and taking out trash
Clear and maintain trails
Maintain physical fitness by hiking long distances wearing packs weighing 45-100 pounds
