Personal Career Break
01.2023 - Current
  • Resigned from a stable career in the mechanical trades industry to pursue other interests and learn new skills.
  • Started off the new year with an online marketing course to learn online marketing, selling and business skills.
  • Took the summer off for as much personal and family time as possible.
  • Ended the year by returning to my interest of music and got back into playing my guitar on a more consistent schedule.

2nd Year Apprentice Heavy Equipment Technician

  • Training and eventually working on my own to dismantle GTA 41/42, and GTA 39 alternators from Komatsu 930E and 980E trucks.
  • Identifying any areas of damaged parts and components and determine the likely cause of damage.
  • Use a multimeter to test voltage in components.
  • Limited training on balancing machines used to to balance specific alternator components such as rotors and impeller fans.
  • Limited training with welding to weld metal weights to balance components.
  • Frequent use of overhead cranes, pressure washers, heating torches and various styles of forklifts to move components.
  • Train new apprentices and journeymen as they are hired.

  • Basic housekeeping and cleaning of the working area. Cleaning tools and equipment and moving and organizing parts. Often using forklifts to do so.
  • Parts prepping (i.e. buffing, sanding, grinding, small repairs, etc.)
  • Washing disassembled AC motors and alternator parts using high pressure washers and shrink wrapping assembled parts for shipment.
  • Trained to also use oxy-acetylene and propane torches.
  • Train new laborers as they are hired.

Swamper

As a swamper on a flushby truck:

  • Assist operator with connecting high pressure lines to oil wells and then flushing them to clean them out from sand build up and determine whether or not they need further maintenance.


As a shop labourer:

  • Clean around the shop, sweeping, clean oil trays out and properly dispose of oil, removing dirty rags and refilling oil rag containers, removing garbage, washing and cleaning pickup trucks, assisting mechanics, etc.

Food Preparation Worker

  • Assisted with regular highway summer maintenance such as crack sealing, spray patching, highway sign installation, pothole patching, guardrail repair, weed whacking, guide post replacing/maintenance, maintaining pickup trucks with regular oil changes and other fluids, etc.
  • Also trained on and operated a loader to fill plow trucks with sand/salt, pile sand and remove snow.
  • In the winter, worked nightshift rotation to check midnight/early morning road conditions in order to determine if plow trucks were required.
