Undergraduate Research Assistant

Department of Psychology, Muhlenberg College
09.2020 - 05.2023
  • Quantitative longevity research on music and its ability to increase and decrease social bonding between humans.
  • Involved participants watching three separate videos of two people swaying to three different songs.
  • Study was a in-between subject design with three conditions: dancers in the video were either swaying “synchronously” to the music, “asynchronously” to the music, or “diadic synchronously” to three different songs.
  • The songs chosen were a exciting song, an emotional “moving” song, and a “neutral” song.
  • All three songs were rated previously based on the criteria above.
  • Study showed that social bonding decreased significantly when the dancers were swaying out of time to the “moving” song.
  • Now looking at the specific musical make-up of “moving” music to determine why social bonding was the lowest when danced to asynchronously.
  • Involves attending weekly lab meetings, experiment building skills using Qualtrics, music software skills such as GarageBand, data analysis skills using SPSS.
  • Collaborated with other faculty and staff in the department.

  • Participants were asked whether or not they had attention deficit issues, and if so whether or not they were on medication.
  • Looking at music that is exciting enough to stimulate the central nervous system, without lyrics.
  • Also looking into the different type of Attention Deficit Disorders and how different types of music may differentially affect attention span.
  • Looking into running same experiment as below, but with a within-subjects design with reading comprehension as the attention task.

  • Utilized the help of CHADD, a national attention deficit support group, to recruit participants for the study.
  • Results were not yet significant, but were trending in the right direction.
  • Showed those with both types of ADHD and were unmedicated performed better on the attention task when listening to the slow-paced non-lyrical song than neurotypicals not listening to music.
