I am currently employed part-time as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. During my undergraduate studies, my clinical areas of interest included acute medicine, community mental health, psychiatric nursing, and Indigenous perspectives on health and healing. As someone who believes in a holistic health approach to treatment, I consider the physical, emotional, and social aspects of patient’s well-being while providing patient centred care.
In Emergency I care for patients who have complex health histories, multiple co-morbidities and likely required significant support with their day-to-day activities. Providing care for these patients has required me to develop skill in conducting comprehensive and timely assessments, as patient’s health conditions and care requirements often undergo rapid changes. Working within in the current health care climate of critical staffing shortages, I believe in the value of working collaboratively with others to enhance patient care.
This experience exposed me to a diverse range of patient cases, providing me with valuable learning and opportunity to consolidate nursing skills in a fast-paced environment. Collaborating with experienced nurses and health care professionals enhanced my teamwork, communication and time management abilities. This specific co-op experience required me to develop skills in adaptation as well as the ability to establishing quick and easy connection with others.
Collaborating with guests and collogues in a remote setting I developed skills in professional communication and learned the importance of building healthy relationships with fellow team members. While working for CMH I was a part of their emergency response team which required me to develop abilities in quick decision making and remain composed under pressure in the event of an avalanche or injury. I was required to partake in CMHs extensive backcountry safety and emergency management training for each full season I was employed.
