• I had 3month rotation postings in Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Medicine & Surgery Departments.
• Duties included:.
• Ward rounds which involved updating and summarizing cases in the ward for review by the unit consultant on a daily basis.
• Call duties as the 1st on call, I facilitated admission of new patients from emergency room & the out-patient clinic, reviewed old patients, ensured patency of iv cannulas, managed pain and informed the 2nd on call if need be.
• Out-patient consultation which required detailed history taking, diagnosis and initial treatment before informing my seniors for onward treatment or possible admission.
• Labour ward call duty involving active management of labour, attending to deliveries, suturing perineal tears under supervision, pap smear sample collection, speculum examination etc.
• Paediatric posting involved resuscitation of new-born under supervision, assessment and diagnosis of common paediatric illnesses like malaria, sepsis, jaundice, hypoglycaemia, febrile convulsion etc.
• Also daily monitoring of serum bilirubin in cases of jaundice, phototherapy, assisting in exchange blood transfusion in severe jaundice.
• Assisting in theatre operations like evacuation of retained products of conception, caesarean section, appendicectomy, herniorrhaphy, open reduction and internal fixation of fractures etc.; pre & post-operative monitoring of patients that have had surgery.
• Carrying out bedside procedures like collection of samples for laboratory investigations, iv cannulation, femoral and radial artery tap, passing of nasogastric tubes and passing of urinary catheter.
• Basic emergency room training such as cpr, ecg interpretation, nebulization, suturing, wound care etc.
