I am currently scheduled to take the LCSW exam this year April 29th after having completed the necessary 3,000 hours March of last year.
I have worked in the field of social work for over 20 years; 12 years as a school social worker at the same school and with the same families which was an honor and a privilege; in this role I facilitated groups for youth based on need which included anger management as well as social skills building In addition i facilitated parent groups in both English and Spanish and created and facilitated the first ever African American museum and celebration which was intended and fulfilled its role of bridging the gap that existed within this school community between blacks and latinos, after 12 years and under new leadership I lost this role due to lack of funding
After this experience of being laid off, I made the decision to pursue my Masters degree program through the title IV e program which meant that I worked for 4 years investigating allegations of child abuse as a frontline Emergency Response worker In this role, i investigated initial allegations of abuse and based on my investigation made the determination if a child or children could remain safely in the home or if the risk was high enough that it warranted removing the child and or children from the home, and work on a reunification plan with parents separated from their child/children; the work itself felt more investigative than practicing social work and based on this I made the decision to leave Child Welfare and spent the next 4 years in hospice home health which ingrained the value of preciousness of life; its fragility l, its strength and its magic all in one; i worked with families facing their own mortality as well as their family members who have to navigate the pending loss and the emotional roller coaster this entails especially when family members are not in sync regarding end of life planning and or the patient due to conditions like dementia is inconsistent and unclear with their ideas and planning; this was truly rewarding work which i walked away from to help care for my older brother who had a massive stroke and then returned to the field where i have collected my 3,000 hours needed to test for the LCSW exam as an Emergency Psych clinician at the Alameda Youth Crisis stabilization unit in San Leandro Ca; a startup company that I have been a part of since day one ; and now considered a lead clinician on the team , and i am responsible for training newly hired clinician in regards to assessments and evaluations
