As Details Clerk, I meet with the next of kin of recently deceased Veterans and assist them in every possible way. I gather signatures from the appropriate next of kin on the death forms, explain the benefits to survivors, and give out forms recapping what we discussed if they should have any questions later. I contact the Iowa Donor Network for every death and am the contact person for the Iowa Donor Network and Eye Bank, as well as the Medical Examiners. I coordinate with funeral homes and hospital morticians regarding autopsies; maintain the supply of flags and issue them as needed. I release the Veterans remains from the morgue, obtain appropriate signatures from the funeral home plus send a copy to the physician to fill out death certificate then I mail the original back to the funeral home plus send a copy to the VA Regional Office and one to scanning along with the rest of the completed death packet. I maintain an electronic death log. I am the witness to recorded consent calls and, maintain a log of all consent calls. I verify all reported outside deaths before I cancel any future appointments the Veteran may have had. I send out letters to request a copy of the death certificate which are used to enter into VISTA, my Excel spreadsheet and send copies to scanning and the VA Regional Office. I promptly return all missed phone calls and while on calls I answer all questions thoroughly or refer them to the proper individual who can be of more assistance.
