VOLUNTEER AND ADVOCATE EXPERIENCE
Co-Chair of the Partners in Care Parent Advisory Committee at BC Children’s Hospital
2001 – 2013
While in this role I was privileged to work in conjunction with high-level hospital administrators, medical personnel, and other families. Crucial in the creation of policies and procedures and also able to share my experience, strength and hope with other families also suffering the devastating effects of having a severely handicapped child.
Experience and skills allowed me to be a fierce advocate for patient and family rights within the hospital. Part of the team that implemented and executed parent full access to their children’s medical records.
During this time, I was also involved in a patient safety initiative and on behalf of BC Children’s Hospital worked to create policies and procedures specific to patient safety, for use throughout the hospital. Selected to participate in medical conferences throughout North America in a public speaking role.
Also during this time, I spoke on the Dan Rather Reports news show, speaking on issues facing the Canadian Health Care System and I successfully secured a published account of my son’s story in a book published in the UK and North America.
Continued to play an active role at BC Children’s Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Center and Canuck Place Children’s Hospital up until September 2013.
Was chosen to speak to the UBC Ethics committee on surrogate decision-making.
