Fitness Director to General Manager to HR.

YMCA of Greater Vancouver
04.1989 - 09.2014
  • As General Manager, served 3500 members with a staff of 150 union and excluded staff members and was supported with hundreds of volunteers. As General Manager I was responsible for all operations of a 100,000 square foot multi-purpose building, program development and delivery, management of staff and volunteers and a 24/7 Residence.
  • My leadership skills in this role were highlighted when I received two President's Awards of Excellence. My first award was received for "consistently demonstrating outstanding leadership through times of challenge and adversity". This award was in recognition of the daunting and challenging job of turning a Downtown YMCA that was losing members, barely hanging on to a membership base of 900 members to a growing membership of 3500 members.
  • My second award was in recognition for closing the Downtown YMCA "with compassionate and professional leadership". I had moved from my General Manager position to our Head Office Human Resources Department. When it was determined the Y would close to re-build a new Y on-site, I was asked by the CEO to take on the interim role of GM again as the current GM had left. This was an emotional and stressful role as I was in charge of telling members, many who had members for 70 years or more, that their Y would be closing for 3 years to re-build a new YMCA. It also required me to keep the operations and programs running with minimal staff.
