My job title was Heavy Truck Technician. I worked on repairing and servicing a fleet of heavy hauler trucks and trailers. I was required to maintain a high standard of workmanship and to have a good attention to detail in order to keep the fleet operating at a high level.
Patience and a good attitude was also required of me. As I've stated, this is a remote site, so not all required parts are always available to complete a repair. Planning ahead and being organized with a clear an focused mind, help keep the fleet moving with less downtime. This is something I excel at and take pride in.
Working as a technician for Toromont Caterpillar, I was required to repair and maintain a wide variety of off road construction equipment as per CAT specifications. A large part of my job consisted of removal and installation of major components. I also assisted with Certified rebuilds and conversions with a team of qualified technicians and journeyman. Toromont gave me an opportunity to work as a technician, remotely, at a number of mine sites in Canada's North. I've taken advantage of these opportunities whenever I can. I was new to heavy equipment when I went to work for Dufferin. I became familiar with the equipment used in road construction working in the maintenance shop. Once I became more familiar with the equipment, I was placed into a service truck to perform maintenance in the field. My job focused mainly on servicing and component replacement such as cutting edges, and bucket teeth, as well as hydraulic hoses, and cylinders.
I was also responsible for the organization and safe operation of the service vehicle on government roads and highways. I was required to be certified to carry dangerous goods and pass security clearance to receive an Airside Vehicles Operators Permit (AVOP) to be allowed airside at Toronto International Airport as the company had been contracted for work there.
I also received certification for overhead crane (15 ton) and mobile crane (8 ton), forklift, skyjack, man lift and fall arrest.
This was the second time that I had worked for this company. I had returned after 4 yrs of an apprenticeship with my previous employer. My duties consisted of maintenance and repair of the refrigeration units on a large number of company trailers and rental containers. I was responsible for the record keeping on all the units, both trailers and tractors, as well as the purchase, handling, and disposal of all refrigeration gases.
I also maintained and serviced the trailers as per MTO when required. Pre departure inspections and adjustments. Yard/Shop maintenance and organization.
I completed my apprenticeship with this company. My duties included a wide variety of mechanical repairs and maintenance on regional garbage vehicles.
I learned how to make hydraulic hoses, repair cylinders, welding (aluminum and steel), tires, brakes, electrical, power train, as well as safety programmes and tools such as WHIMIS, and first aid.
This was my first significant job after high school. I worked for this family business as a tire mechanic and maintained their large fleet of trailers as well as over 100 highway tractors.
I worked hard for this company and the result was an apprenticeship. Although I didn't complete my apprenticeship with them, they were happy to help me get started.
Also, while working for this company, I learned how to shunt and manoeuvre highway tractors and trailers with precision and care.
