• As detention control officer, receive detainees referred by the courts or brought in by peace officers; conduct background investigations to determine the probation and warrant status of the detainees; serve any active warrants on detainees; make the decision to detain or release the detainee; conduct intake duties when a detainee is admitted to juvenile hall; determine appropriate placement of status offenders requiring group home or crisis home placement; explain the policies and rules of the home supervision and electronic monitoring programs as necessary; assist detainee and parents in completing necessary paperwork.
• As lead correctional officer, oversee activities of assigned unit; supervise, evaluate and coordinate programs; develop treatment programs and activities; assist in the training of new staff; keep supervisor apprised of staff performance; explain policies and procedures to staff as necessary; take immediate action in cases of emergencies and notify superiors; conduct tours of the facility and assist the public as needed; write and submit reports; serve on committees; assist in the oral interview process for new staff.
• As duty officer, oversee the operations and activities of the entire detention and/or treatment facility when no Supervising Probation Officer is on duty; initiate investigations of major incidents that occur involving detainee; make temporary reassignments of personnel as needed to cover units; confer with all institutional staff and act as resource person in solving operational and disciplinary problems of detainee.
• Institutional Training Officer (ITO): Supervise and train officer trainees in the Institutional Training Program (ITP). Instruct, supervise, and provide feedback to trainees assigned. Document trainees progress and report to the Riverside County Probation (RCP) Staff Development Unit (SDU) regarding the trainee's progress and make recommendations for the trainees advancement or remediation as necessary.
• Annual Training Instructor: Instruct initial and refresher mandatory annual training for RCP staff as directed by SDU. Including Defensive Tactics, Use of Restraints, The Wrap, Institution Scenarios, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI).
• Juvenile Corrections Officer (JCO) CORE Academy Instructor: As directed by SDU, instruct modules of the RCP JCO CORE Academy, as per the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) curriculum and specific academy lesson plans.
• Peer Support Member: As assigned by Peer Support management, respond to locations to provide logistical and emotional support for department members and/or members of partner agencies post crisis/critical incident. Direct members to appropriate counseling resources as needed.
• Provide supervision to detainees that may be over the age of 18 years, in a 24-hour, 7-day a week secure facility.
• Supervise the conduct and behavior of detainees; maintain necessary order and structure; direct the groups in constructive activities and impose restrictions when necessary.
• Conduct individual and group counseling sessions in an attempt to modify antisocial behavior and to assist detainees in adjusting to detention situations; provide guidance on personal problems such as relationships with peers, parents, and school personnel.
• Instruct and encourage good manners, sportsmanship, and proper attitudes towards work, play and citizenship. • Maintain proper living standards and health habits through instruction on personal hygiene; maintain effective security and safety procedures within the unit at all times and remain constantly alert for attempts to escape.
• Supervise such leisure time activities as games (indoors and outside), athletics (indoors and outside), crafts, and when required, encourage participation of individuals not already engaged in these activities.
• Instruct in the rules of various games and in craft methods; referee games and organize tournaments.
• Assist in planning and executing effective activities and programs for specific group needs; prepare observation reports on detainees’ demeanor, behavior, appearance, interests, skills, progress, and needs; administer first aid when required.
• Keep the unit logs and other written information up to date.
• Register and store personal belongings; search for weapons and other contraband; check for marks, bruises and infections as required.
• Assist in training subordinate personnel; assist in the admitting and releasing operation.
• Transport detainees.
• Escort detainees to Court and attend Court proceedings.
• Type reports, document detainee activity/behavior and retrieve data and information.
