- Analyzes all available information and takes corrective actions, such as requests for credit transfers, recomputes tax, penalty, and interest (including restricted interest). Explains actions taken, and when a balance due remains, determines the taxpayer's ability to pay delinquent accounts by analyzing collection information statements.
- Elicits sensitive, personal, and financial information from individuals who may attempt to withhold additional sources of income or overpayments to ensure compliance with reporting and disclosure requirements.
- Makes determinations and uses sound judgment concerning taxpayers' data, and responds appropriately to the degree to which the individual understood their responsibilities, and whether errors in their records reflected honest mistakes or fraudulent intent.
- Advises taxpayers of the enforcement actions that may be taken if they fail to meet commitments to file returns and/or pay tax liabilities.
- Appropriately identifies those situations that meet taxpayer advocate criteria and makes a referral.
- Researches telephone IDRS, and other database sources for information to locate taxpayers and their assets.
- Identifies the best levy sources and issues levies on taxpayer wages, bank accounts, and accounts receivable. Educate taxpayers on future actions needed to achieve and maintain voluntary compliance by computing and/or advising on tax liability.
