• Ensuring High-Quality Teaching: Promoting effective teaching practices, engaging students, and fostering a love for mathematics.
• Curriculum Development: Ensure that the curriculum, schemes of work, and resources used to teach mathematics are high-quality, appropriate, and accessible.
• Assessment: Ensuring high-quality summative assessments for each subject is blueprinted against the Alberta Program of Studies.

• Encourage and foster learning in students
• Teach courses and programs of study that are prescribed, approved or authorized by the Alberta Ministry of Education: Math 10C, Math 20-1, Math 30-1, 30-2, Math 31, Math 31 IB, and Math 35
• Regularly assess students and periodically report the results of the assessment to the students, the students' parents and the board
• Maintain order and discipline among the students while they are in the school or on the school grounds
• Participate in curriculum development and field testing of new curriculum
• Develop, field test, and grade provincial assessments
• Supervise student teachers

• I was the Head of the Department for Secondary Mathematics in three international schools: Strothoff International School, ISS International School Singapore, and Dresden International School.
• Each international school was distinct within its unique cultural, learner, and staffing profile.
• All three schools were IB World Schools, and apart from some minor variances, the requirements of the role of HoD did not substantially differ between institutions.

The role of HoD included the following:

• Offer a compelling vision of the organizational and educational future for colleagues and learners.
• Provide guidance and educational leadership for math department members in all areas of pedagogy, assessment, and reporting.
• IBMYP and IBDP curriculum development and documentation (Atlas Rubicon).
• Staff evaluation and mentoring.

Instruction and Curriculum:

• Plan and deliver lessons based on the Alberta Education curriculum, including adapting to diverse learning needs.
• Use various teaching methods, like lectures, discussions, audio-visual presentations, and laboratory/field studies.
• Create and enforce classroom rules, policies, and procedures.

Assessment and Evaluation:

• Assess student learning progress through various methods, like assignments, tests, and projects.
• Evaluate student progress, and provide feedback to students and parents.
• Identify individual student needs and adjust instruction accordingly.

Professional Development:

• Stay current with best practices in teaching and learning.
• Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Adherence to Regulations:

• Follow the Education Act, Alberta Education guidelines, and school board policies.
