My Teaching Philosophy / Story

  • Every student can learn, and every single student should be given every opportunity.
  • When going through school, the older I got, the increasingly poorer in academics I became. I had no belief in myself or in my future, so there was no reason in my mind to attempt to make any effort. That all changed with a middle school English teacher who saw my potential. There refused to let me coast by as other teachers had, nor would he let me settle for any failing grade. He forced me to try, and as a result, my grades in his class went up. Furthermore, when I saw the fruits of my hard work in that class, I was inspired to work harder in my other classes as well. I will never forget the effect that one teacher had on my life. Throughout my teaching career thus far, I have seen many students with that same mindset, and I decided to make it my mission to help inspire them as much as I possibly could. I wish I could say that I reached them all, but of course that wouldn’t be possible. It was the students I was able to reach, including one student who came back to visit a few years later dressed in his full Marine uniform to tell me I had been his favorite teacher, that have kept me going.
