- Train Operations: Ensure that all freight trains are operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with CN Rail’s policies, federal regulations, and safety protocols. This includes overseeing the train crew, managing train movement, and ensuring the safe delivery of goods to their destination.
- Pre-Trip Inspection: Conduct thorough inspections of locomotives, railcars, and equipment before departure. Identify any mechanical issues and report them immediately to the appropriate maintenance team.
- Coupling and Uncoupling: Operate equipment to safely couple and uncouple railcars, ensuring that connections are secure before and after train movements.
- Train Movement Coordination: Work closely with the train dispatcher to receive movement instructions, relay important information, and ensure proper track alignment. Operate the train according to planned schedules, adjusting to delays or emergency situations as required.
- Signaling and Communication: Maintain constant communication with dispatchers, engineers, and other conductors regarding train movement, delays, and safety conditions. Use signaling devices and radios to coordinate train movements and relay important operational data.
- Safety Compliance: Enforce and adhere to CN Rail’s safety procedures, including emergency response protocols, safety inspections, and accident/incident reporting. Participate in regular safety drills and initiatives to maintain a safe working environment.
- Documentation: Ensure all necessary documentation is completed accurately, including freight manifests, inspection logs, train movement records, and safety reports.
- Cargo Management: Ensure the proper loading, unloading, and securement of freight on the railcars. Verify cargo and ensure it is safely distributed and aligned for transport.
- Emergency Response: Act quickly in the event of emergencies such as derailments, equipment failures, or accidents. Implement proper emergency procedures and assist in the investigation and reporting of incidents.
Working Conditions: • Hours: Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Schedules can vary based on train schedules and operational needs.
