To obtain a position as a shelter worker.

I am a committed Shelter and social Worker professional with over 8 years of experience as a frontline staff, administrator and social worker. Because of working in a number of charitable organisations, I have become more passionate about supporting individuals and families experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health and trauma. A variety of trainings including; Toronto Shelter Standards and Staff safety guide, Harm Reduction Program, Client Centred work, Crisis Prevention and Intervention and CPR/First Aid have developed my skills and personal attributes to work more in the human service sector. My most recent position working as a relief shelter worker has strengthened my skills, knowledge and approach on; de-escalation techniques for both clients and fellow staff, refugees, homelessness in Toronto, Housing First approach, working with diverse populations including those experiencing homelessness, barriers due to social, mental, sexual factors and persons with a history in the criminal justice system, Community Resource mapping, crisis prevention and key legislation and policies at Municipal and province levels among others. I am confident that my experience has exposed me more to; case management, documentation of incidents and client information, development of case plans, ensuring safety and wellbeing of clients and staff, shift occurrence documentation among others. I am very passionate and committed to working with and for people whose lives are affected by drug use, mental health and chronic homelessness and other causes of vulnerability. I have strong communication skills and the ability to connect well including in diverse settings. I have been privileged to work with a number of individuals from different backgrounds, coming from different spheres of life changing events, including substance use. With experience as a client support worker, I strongly believe in confidentiality and individualization among other principles to serve the client better and meet their needs.

Shelter relief Worker

  • Perform initial screening and assess eligibility for admission in the emergency shelter program
  • Ensure client's and staff's safety through regular walk around the facility and regular bed checks
  • Aid when emergencies occur at the Shelter and other critical incidents using problem solving and crisis intervention to de-escalate conflicts
  • Ensure professional customer service skills in establishing and maintaining working relationships with clients, other service providers, fellow staff when addressing service inquiries requests and complaints
  • Document shift occurrence information and other incidents at work in line with internal policies these include incident reports, recording admittance, completion of log and the discharge information in the SMIS
  • Participate in meetings like at the start of the shift so as staff are allocated tasks to execute, and client case plan
  • Admit clients and assist them to integrate in the Shelter program by providing details about the program, rules and policies, fire safety procedures and other programs like housing first
  • Assisted in conflicts management and crisis prevention through de-escalation strategies among clients
  • Assisted in meal delivery and serving such as breakfast, lunch and dinner during the shift
  • Ensured safety of the client through hourly walk arounds and environmental scans during the wellness check
  • Served clients with harm reduction kits such as long kits, shorts kits, crack and methyl kits to users
  • Monitored the users to ensure that there are no overdoses during the shift
  • Medical reminders: clients who are on daily medications or those who must visit the pharmacist or nurse to receive their medicine were reminded by the staff
