  • Organizing, planning and conducting chemical analyses to determine compliance with requirements of the Fish Inspection Act, Food and Drug Act and the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.
  • Participating in the development of and conducting investigational projects related to the improvement of early detection of chemical and toxicological contaminants in various food products.
  • Preparing reports of analytical results from laboratory analyses in a manner appropriate for distribution.
  • Maintaining, adjusting and calibrating laboratory instrumentation required in the detection of chemical and toxicological contaminants in food products.
  • A liaison from the National Laboratory Safety Coordinator to our local Laboratory OSH committee and employees relating information on the National OSH program.
  • Conducts Safety Audits and Workplace Inspections to ensure CFIA OSH program requirements are met.
  • Laboratory Resource contact for all OSH issues.
  • Responsibilities:
  • Chemistry Laboratory Analyst:
  • Perform quantitative chemical analyses to identify chemicals (nutrients, toxins, and food additives) in a wide variety of food products in order to provide the information required by the inspection staff to enforce the regulatory programs of the CFIA
  • Research, evaluate, and validate analytical methods for the quantitative analysis of nutrients, toxins, and food additives in a variety of food products where existing methods require improvement or new methods need to be implemented.
  • Operate and calibrate a variety of analytical instruments including UPLC-DAD-MS, LC-UV, Flame AA, LECO combustion unit, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer, etc. and perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory instrumentation/equipment.
  • Adhere to quality assurance protocols (ISO 17025) and familiar with the Sample Manager/LSTS software used for reporting results within the agency.
  • Communicating, orally or in writing with Agency staff, other departments or agencies or concerned individuals or groups test results and information regarding procedures, methods etc.
  • Training other technicians, students and foreign visitors in analytical techniques within own specialized area.
  • Supervising summer students and/or casual employees by discussing analytical procedures, demonstrating instrument operation, explaining calculation methods and ensuring that the work is correct and timely.
  • Laboratory Safety Coordinator:
  • Gathers, with supervisory approval, OSH related information at the work site upon request from the National Laboratory Safety Coordinator.
  • Attends the work site safety committee meetings.
  • Ensure that each laboratory completes the Employers Annual Hazard Occurrence Report Form and the Annual OSH Committee Report as required by HRDSC.
  • Ensure that new employees complete their OSH orientation.
  • Establish and monitor safety and health programs including WHMIS, emergency response and TDG.
  • Review standard operating protocols and procedures with regards to safety and health.
  • Coordinate safety and health training, to all staff on an annual basis as per OSH committee objectives.
  • Distribute safety-related educational/awareness materials and information.
  • Maintain current knowledge and reference materials on safety regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Conducts safety audits and workplace inspections to ensure CFIA OSH program requirements are met.
