Research Experience

GENDER DIFFERENCES IN ACADEMIC COPING, LEARNER READINESS, AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE ACROSS STEM MAJORS (2023, Supervised by Dr. Mary Desrocher, York University)

  • This study was done for my thesis project, and was conducted with the intent of addressing the gender disparity that still exists within the STEM field. For my thesis, I gained ethics approval from York University Ethics board before administering a survey via Qualtrics to York University students in at least their second year of undergraduate studies. I collected detailed research on past studies done on the subject, and used jamovi for the statistical analysis. For this particular study, I used a one-way ANOVA, frequency distributions, and Chi-Square of independent samples to make comparisons across gender, race, and major. The results indicated that female students place more importance with regards to identifying with their professor and having a role model in their field as motivation to keep pursuing their studies.

PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND CAREGIVING ABILITIES IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS (2022, Supervised by Dr. Jodi Martin, York University)

  • This study was conducted as requirement for my intermediate research methods course, and was a group collaboration with my peers. Our study was concerned with comparing scores on the DASS (Depression, Anxiety, Stress scale) and the CQ (Caregiving Questionnaire) for those who are in romantic relationships. Ethics approval was gained from the York University Ethics board, and the survey was distributed via Qualtrics to any person who was in a romantic relationship for more than 3 months. For this study, test-retest reliability, and internal consistency was calculated for each scale. Also, the Pearson's R was calculated across sub-scales using jamovi. The results indicated that there was a negative correlation between stress and anxiety and being within close proximity to one's romantic partner. Once the research was completed, I was required to submit my individual research report based on our data collection. We presented our research poster as a team.
