Storytelling is my calling card. Here’s a good example. I re-worked the University of Alberta’s number one, marketing events, annual spring and fall Convocation ceremonies. U of A ‘s annual convocations were traditionally framed around photos of anonymous, smiling grads and smiling parents. I simply added emotional storytelling with more focused and fun, visuals and copy. Here’s an example. A photo shows a happy graduate in biological sciences is dressed in a standard commencement outfit, the gown and mortarboard, but this grad is also wearing hip waders and they’re standing in a fast-moving stream. Why? Because a U of A degree got them their new career in freshwater ecology. All the messaging in this campaign tied a U of A degree directly to the student’s success. That’s one example of how I used the writing and visual storytelling experience from my careers in journalism, producing/writing TV programs, ad campaigns, TV commercials and marketing campaigns. My professional storytelling journey started with journalism. At CBC TV, I went from reporting on the six o’clock news to producing documentaries for the broadcaster. Next, I became an independent writer/director and produced approximately 15 hours of programming for Discovery Channel, National Geographic and other streaming services. My experience in marketing came with my science communicator positions at the University of Alberta and University of British Columbia. In addition to reworking U of A’s marketing opportunities student graduation events I was part of the creative team behind the university’s national awareness advertising campaign in 2013. I produced the TV commercial and associated print ads for the What’s Next? campaign. The commercial, titled, “Rematch with Malaria,” shines a light on the quality of people behind the U of A research and shows the university’s global reach for improving people’s lives Results: The video caught the eye of by Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and a champion of worldwide efforts to eradicate malaria. Gate’s support brought technology investment for a new U of A designed device for early diagnosis and treatment for malaria. Here’s a link to “Rematch with Malaria.” https://vimeo.com/69860612 It would be great to meet with you and see what I could bring to AMA. Sincerely, Bian Murphy
