First year Medical Resident at the University of California Irvine Department of Behavioral Health and Sciences. Areas of interest include Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Interventional therapeutic modalities (i.e. ECT, TMS, Ketamine). My diverse background and global experiences, from my four years living abroad in Belgium to my time shadowing physicians in Lisbon, Portugal, has helped me to establish a holistic yet evidence approach to practicing medicine, and allows me to connect with a diverse patient population.
A volunteer teaching opportunity during which I partnered with a current psychiatry resident, Ellen Kim M.D., to develop a curriculum about teaching psychiatry concepts to a group of high school students through the Saint Louis University Summer Scholars Program. The program involves a group of underrepresented and disadvantaged high school students who have an early interest in a future career in medicine. During the program I taught four hour and a half sessions, with topics ranging from psychiatry as a profession, different psychiatric conditions (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, etc.), the stigma around mental health and psychiatry as a profession, and treatments for psychiatric conditions. We also had the students participate in a small group project, where they had to create their own public service announcement about a mental health related topic.
Learning communities at the University consisted of a small group of students from all four years of medical along with a faculty mentor. The goal of the communities was to promote a sense of community between students in different parts of the medical school journey and provide students with resources and connections. As a learning community mentor, I served as the head of this community. I was a liaison of communication between our faculty mentor and the rest of the community, and I oversaw setting up monthly meetings. During those meetings, I led small group discussions concerns topics such as physician burnout, exam/step preparation, creating a study schedule, career exploration and how to get involved in different events and projects around the university.
