Indigenous Policy Advisor

  • Compiled divisional responses of the Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System (MAPS) Indigenous Stream Recommendations. Ensured all program areas addressed the policy implications, cost implications and flagged where more information was needed. This roll-up helped prioritize recommendations and will inform the Indigenous Health Unit work plan for the next 3 years.
  • Researched existing policies and procedures to gain understanding of current expense claim processes and developed an internal best practices process document and a PowerPoint presentation for external stakeholders on how to complete expense claims in order to get paid in a timely manner.
  • Reviewed and revised the Indigenous Innovation Fund and the Indigenous Patient Navigator guidelines, application providing feedback based on my grant administrator experience and drafted the briefing note to get Assistant Deputy Minister approval.
  • Increased my knowledge of Indigenous health issues in Alberta and across the country by reading a variety of articles and reports on racism in healthcare, chronic disease issues and the importance of cultural understanding and engagement with First Nations and Metis settlements.

  • Created a step by step grant process document detailing over 80 steps in the grant process from application to payment. This document was shared with other areas as a best practice document.
  • From the process document I simplified the process even more and created a one page checklist that was later adopted by ADMO and is to be used across the division.
  • Provide comprehensive coordination for all aspects of grants assigned by the department
  • Assist the Grant Manager by drafting grants, briefing notes, letters, ensuring Financial and Legal review by routing packages for signature and finally entering the grant in the Grant Administration Management System (GAMS)
  • Maintain a grant tracking spreadsheet to ensure grant funding, payments, and reports are submitted on time.

  • Drafted briefing notes for the Minister promoting EDT programs such as the Alberta Investor Tax Credit (AITC) the Capital Investment Tax Credit (CITC) and the Community and Regional Support program (CARES).
  • Developed a summary report based on a Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) survey sent to five communities across Alberta. The purpose of the survey was to identify resources that attract, retain, and grow business investment in these communities. The summary report helped identify strengths and gaps in community programs and services.
  • Researched BR&E initiatives by conducting a cross-jurisdictional scan across Canada identifying common themes and this information was used to inform Albertan s' of different best practices around the country.
  • This information was posted on our Community Economic Development site to be used by municipalities when developing their own BR&E program
  • Coordinated the Economic Development and Trade response to a cross-ministry request to develop recommendations for policy options that could result in a Provincial Broadband Strategy
  • Raised awareness of the REDS team by completing a communications project profiling members of the REDS team that was featured on the internal website and sent out in the DM Communique.
