Summary

Before becoming unemployed due to the Writers/Actors Strike of 2023, I was a 3D Generalist at Guru Animation Studio located in Toronto, Ontario. Since then, every day I have been modelling and updating my portfolio and posting the process of my 3D models on my youtube channel. In my spare time I am a digital artist, a gym rat and a drummer.

I will take the initiative to do a job myself if I see that it needs to be completed. I have always wanted to create things, I find I thrive in this industry especially knowing that I am helping create Saturday morning cartoons.

Before launching into my professional career (June 2020), I had been hired a couple of times as a freelance modeler and artist where I have completed jobs from translating blueprints to 3D models to creating logos. I’ve had experience working as a major part of the technical crew at my high school, where I would work the audio and lighting for school assemblies and plays. I also worked at a local television company for my high school co-op where I learned all the facets of broadcasting and working behind the scenes to air a program.

Work History

3D Modeler (Paw Patrol)

Guru Animation Studio
Toronto, ON
04.2023 - 05.2023
  • Using maya, I modeled a handful of props to help out the Paw Patrol team, this required me to look at the 2D concept art designs and translate it into 3D space
  • I was required to sculpt rocks and ice for the show. I used zbrush to sculpt, dynamesh or zremesh to a lower poly asset and bring into maya. Usually the surfacing team would bake the hi and low poly assets, if I needed to do so, I used xNormals, usually providing an AO map, a Normal map and a Curvature map
  • If I needed to do a fix, I would usually ask for a drawover, over my screenshot of the model so I could give the team exactly what they needed

Xplore Previz (Paw Patrol)

Guru Animation Studio
Toronto , ON
10.2022 - 04.2023
  • I had to watch the weekly leica and translate the 2D art into 3D space
  • This required me to stamp in the pre-existing locations, characters, props, etc into maya and setup key story points and action points to see if it was plausible for the 3D space
  • If a location or prop did not exist, I had the luxury of making an "xplore" location/prop. This would require me to either model a prop or kit-bash a few pre-existing locations to create a new one
  • I would then present my 3D screenshots (alongside the leica) to the directors once a week and show them why this can or cannot work

Render Wrangler (Abby Hatcher, Mecha Builders)

Guru Animation Studio
Toronto, Ontario
06.2020 - 10.2022
  • This job required me to have strict deadlines, if the shot or episode was very heavy, I had to let the team know and manage the jobs on the farm by putting them on heavier machines
  • This would also require me to finesse the frames of the shot, if the job failed or timed-out, I would go into the directory, view the stale frames and requeue those specific frames within the render farm
  • I would come in for a couple of hours on the weekend and requeue any failed/timeout jobs so that they would be ready for the next week, if anything major occurred, I flagged it to the TDs or my CG Supe
  • I keep in contact with all department heads and production and render shots out as well as troubleshoot any failures within the render farm
  • Once a week, I write up a brief report to let Technical Directors know how everything is going, I also do this bi-weekly for the production team
  • When I do not have anything to render, I usually pickup some simple finaling tasks or watch dailies of whatever we’ve rendered on the weekend/ the day before

Shot Finaler (Mecha Builders)

Guru Animation Studio
Toronto, ON
05.2021 - 06.2021
  • For roughly a month or so I was a shot finaler at the studio, they were short handed a few staff members so I was re-signed a couple months earlier before returning to a render wrangling position
  • I fixed small intersections on characters or props within the animation file
  • Swapped assets in/out of said scene
  • Adjusted settings such as xgen or camera settings, usually these settings were given to me and I had to paste them into Shotgun
  • I investigated corrupt files that were stubborn to render or had weird artifacts (either in the animation or lighting file)
  • I would create overrides using very basic python script or maya's MEL script

3D Modeler (Mecha Builders)

Animation Studio
Toronto
12.2020 - 03.2021
  • While still working on Abby Hatcher, I had some spare time so I started helping out modelling props on the show Mecha Builders
  • I have modeled roughly 30 props in maya with proper topology for season 1
  • I followed the 2D design concept art for the props, modeled them within maya and showed them to my directors or leads, if a fix was required I would ask for a draw over and do said fix

Logo Design

Freelance
02.2020 - 03.2020
  • Was commissioned to create a logo for a protein pod startup company
  • I had to sketch a few ideas for a protein company and present them to the client
  • While there were no strict deadlines, I tried to update the client every couple of days
  • I used photoshop to primarily do this work

3D Modeler

Multifold Company
11.2019 - 12.2019
  • Using 3DS Max, I was given house blueprints by the company to be translated into 3D so that the company could visually show their client what their house would look like

Valentino’s Place Restaurant
Stoney Creek, Ontario
09.2014 - 06.2019

Cable 14 Television
Hamilton, Ontario
02.2014 - 06.2014
  • Worked approximately 290 hours (240 required) learning all facets of television broadcasting from camera and audio work, to airing programs.

3D Modeler

Zhang’s Restaurant
05.2020 - 04.2020
  • During the beginning of covid, a family owned business reached out to me to translate their storefront blueprints into 3D so that their contractor would have a better understanding (visually) of what work they wanted done
  • They wanted a drive thru window near the front of their store for no contact delivery
  • I used maya for this project, I sent the client a playblast render of the work I had done, so they could show their contractor

Skills

  • Time Management Skills Rendering- Every week for every department there are specific shots and setups that need to be ready on time I’m the person who has to manage it all within the render farm If I don’t prioritize jobs/shots properly, people can’t work I also need to prioritize episode delivery dates If an episode is due at the end of the week, I need to make sure those shots are top priority and we deliver to client on time
  • Modeling- Every week we are assigned new props for the upcoming episode, these need to be done in a timely manner (usually a week and a half) following the designs and for the director review
  • Previz- Every week I tackle a new episode, I need to make sure that my work is done for the directors every week so they can approve out the early stages of the episode and it can move on officially to the 3D departments
  • Following Instructions Freelancing- Following blueprint designs or changes requested by the client
  • Guru Animation Studio- I was hired during a pandemic where we had to work from home My training was all within video calls and screen sharing by my fellow coworkers I followed these instructions so I could be efficient and proactive at what I do as a wrangler
  • I have to render specific shots within a timely manner so that the team can validate, lighting, assets or an animation
  • Modelling/Previz- I had to follow the leica and the designs to see how assets or the environment was being interacted with I needed to do this so that my work would make sense
  • Finaling- I had to read the notes left on shotgun and adjust whatever was needed for the problematic shots
  • Working with others Rendering- I was my own department and I had to work with other departments in order for everything to run smoothly If there is an issue within the farm, myself and other heads work together in order to fix any errors
  • Modelling/Previz/Finaling- All of these positions are group efforts- I need to work with my team so we can produce the best possible work for the directors and client If I am unsure of something, I talk to my leads/supervisors for better clarification
  • Communication Rendering- I have to communicate with all the department heads to see what needs to be rendered for the day, or for the upcoming week I let Production and Technical Directors know how the farm is doing once a week I also keep my CG Supervisor up to date on how I am managing the farm a couple times a week so they can translate this to production and higher ups
  • Modelling- If I have an issue with the assigned asset, I would talk to my lead about how to approach it If need be, the lead would do a draw over on my in progress asset so I had a better understand of what everyone was looking for
  • Xplore Previz- After watching the leica I would ask questions to the leads on what they wanted to see specifically for the episode after my work was done I did this so that I could give the directors the best possible results for the weekly presentation I did
