Work History

Conservation Genomics Technician

University of California
  • Managing the Mini-Core for the CCGP to generate high quality sequence data to better the understanding and conservation of California's biodiversity
  • Extracted DNA from a variety of tissue/taxa samples using various methods then QC the samples for potential quality, quantity and contamination issues
  • Generate, QC and pool genomic libraries for a large variety of taxa for next generation sequencing
  • Continuing to adapt and adjust Mini-Core workflow to better improve data quality and throughput
  • Updating and maintaining a high throughput research lab from data input and database management to reagent/lab supply ordering.

Molecular Biology Technologist

The Jackson Laboratory
6 2020 - Current
  • Promoted after reaching proficiency at the technician level
  • Conducting and assisting with CRISPR and Plasmid based gene editing methods to develop new mouse models of disease for Biomedical Research
  • Utilized both wet and dry bench techniques using high fidelity DNA extractions for PCR based assays and analyzing Sanger sequencing data to determine genotypes of tissue samples ranging from SNPs, gene knock in/out to mosaic genomes
  • Working and communicating between two departments with Study Directors and fellow technicians in a new, previously undefined position to create a more efficient and productive lab
  • Experience being trained in new techniques as well as assisting new technicians in a molecular biology lab.

Genotyping Technologist

Transgenic Genotyping Services
03.2017 - 06.2020
  • Utilized several DNA Extraction techniques for mouse blood, tissue and sperm samples
  • Performed hundreds of different PCR based assays and analyzed results from gel electrophoresis to Sanger Sequencing to determine the genotypes of laboratory research mice
  • Experience troubleshooting and problem-solving assays to ensure precise and reliable data is reported in the most efficient way.

Facilities Assistant

Mohonk Preserve
03.2013 - 11.2013
  • Worked individually and with coworkers doing outdoor and indoor manual labor
  • Initiated and completed projects to manage natural resources and increase the public's enjoyment of the natural environment.

Education

Bachelor of Science - Biology

Syracuse University
07.2016 -

Skills

PCR for SNP detection, gene deletion/insertion and products up to 8kb

Coursework

  • Data Carpentry Genomics - Importing and organizing genomic data from the command line (ongoing)
  • R for Reproducible Scientific Analysis - Using RStudio to import, organize and extract data
  • Plotting and Programming in Python - Organizing, reading and plotting data with fundamental Python functions and commands
  • Quantitative Trait Mapping in R - Using the qtl2 package to link genotypes and phenotypes
  • Genetics I - Applying the tools and concepts of genetics to laboratory mice

Packrafting/Backpacking/Splitboarding

A constant desire to get outside and explore has lead me to many places from Maine to California. I am particularly interested in potentially using my packrafting experiences over the last 4 years to aid in wildlife monitoring and conservation. As a symbol of exploration and conservation, Alaska is a one of a kind place to develop this desire.
