  • Senior Maintenance Aide will frequently work from remote locations to efficiently complete task assignments. This position will provide daily support to California Conservation Corp (CCC) and American Conservation Experience (ACE) crews in project implementation that includes trail and road construction, maintenance and resource activities. Work will include heavy manual labor, extensive walking to and from work sites, hot summer temperatures, cold winter conditions including working in rain and snow conditions, and work in high altitude, desert and coastal environments. This position requires extensive travel and long-term project coordination at any State Park. This position is required to work nights, weekends, and odd hours and overtime in accomplishment of assigned tasks. This position will spike camp at work sites throughout the state. Remote work locations, 8 or 10-day work assignments, overnight travel and spike camps are expected.

Power Equipment Specialist

  • Power Tool Use/Maintenance
  • Types of tools can include: chainsaws, pole saws, hedgers, jackhammers, leaf blowers, power drills, grip hoists. Keep record of serviceable tools and responsible for organization and storage.   • Additional Duties: Vehicle Operations. Driving corps members to and from project and volunteer sites. Transport of tools and equipment for work, with use of straps, tie-downs and flaggings. As well as the connection and use of cargo trailers, flat-bed trailers, etc. for transport of machinery (skid-steer loader, mini excavator, trenchers). Experienced in transport and operation of chipper trailers.
  • Trail Building and Maintenance
  • Uses power equipment, saws, trackbarrows, rotary hammer, drills, and generators. Project sites have included: Stockton Reserve Trail and Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Constructed technical retaining structures such as multi-tier rock walls, rip-rap drainages, elevated causeways, drain-lens, and wood cribbing structures.
  • Leadership Role
  • Work with supervisor to plan the work day dependent on project goals, present crew members, length of project, and other such variables. Tailgate safety reviews and job hazard analysis drafting. Instructed coworkers in the maintenance and operation of light machinery to perform a variety of trail/road construction related tasks. Take charge in situations where the supervisor is not immediately available. Completed over 7,000 hours of project work, training and emergency response in 3 years with the CCC.

Wildland Fire Hand Crew

  • CAL FIRE Type 1 Initial Attack Wildland Firefighting Handcrew
  • Fire Line Construction: Worked with crew to construct a handline that will hold fire and prevent further growth of the fire. Fire line was constructed using hand tools and chainsaws to remove vegetation and reach bare mineral soil.
  • Mop Up Operations: Worked with crew to patrol burn, extinguish residual smokes and burning material to prevent reignition or spot fires from starting and growing.
  • Structure Protection: Identified defensible structures and verified that the surrounding area is safe and clear from fuel that could lead the fire to burning the structure. Either “prep and hold”; staying to verify the structure does not burn or “standalone”; clearing the fuel, then leaving when comfortable and sure the structure will not be burnt as the fire passes.
  • Fuel Break & Burn Pile Construction: Worked to clear vegetation from an area to reduce the amount of scattered fuel. This will slow or help control the spread of a fire, either planned or unplanned. Take the cut vegetation and crate burn piles. The burn piles will be lit, typically with fuses or drip torches to remove the fuel and further reduce the risk of uncontrollable fire spread.
  • Physical Training: Regularly partake in conditioning workouts, runs, hikes, etc. either as a crew or on personal time.
  • Gear Maintenance: Responsible for having all PPE, keeping it clean, and verifying it is in proper working condition.

  • Project Work: Local and Spike
  • Working with organizations such as CalTrans, Dept. of Water and Resources, Modesto Jr. College, Buena Vista Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians of California, etc. Worked on Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) projects in the Sonora and Twain Harte areas, Prop. 68 projects in the City of Merced Irrigation District and City of Stockton.
  • Work with supervisor to plan the work day dependent on project goals, present crew members, length of project, and other such variables. Have all necessary PPE for the work day. Arrive early to prepare vehicles every morning for transportation of crew members and all necessary equipment. Rotate out kitchen and cooking responsibilities daily while on spike. Frequent camping/ spiking out in remote wilderness locations for up to 8 days at a time to perform field work with minimal stock/resupply support.
  • Types of work include: Invasive species removal on native land, landscaping, fence repair and removal, vegetation management projects, irrigation installation and repair, roadside brushing, litter removal, sidewalk installation and maintenance, trail rehabilitation, fuel break construction.
