Voluntary/Unpaid Work Experience

CTV Christmas Daddies - Developed software application for use in the annual Christmas Daddies telethon. Product is used by volunteers who receive bids on auction items donated by the community to raise money for families at Christmas time. Product supports user management, creation of auction items, bidders, simulated elastic search, and live reporting of the telethon performance which is used on live TV by Steve Murphy.

Training and Professional Development

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer

I am currently pursuing an education and training program through my current employer. This program is called DevSecOps; training is done on my own time and through my own avenues. The training is culminated through a review of my learned skills from a predefined list as well as acquiring a certification from the linux foundation called Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD). I have been working towards my exam, (scheduled in february) through a purchased course on Udemy.

Magic Storytime

My kids ask me nightly to make up bedtime stories for them. Due to the advances in AI, I decided to develop an AI powered mobile application which through a user interface, allowed my children to create their own stories and choose the characters, setting, genre, reading difficulty and pictures. Upon selecting these details the application would build them their stories and read it to them.

My goal was to learn how to build a complete application using a cross-platform programming library called React-Native. This taught me how to program for desktop, web, IOS or Android applications within a single codebase. This project also caused me to become immersed in the world of AI, learning how to utilize existing models and available APIs to wrap this technology in an easy to use and understand interface. I learned how to build this application through the courses I bought on Udemy and with help from ChatGPT. Application is available on Apple store "Magic Storytime".

Innovative learning methods

ChatGPT

With the emergence of Artificial Intelligence models, specifically chatGPT, I explored how powerful and reliable the technology was. I opted to build a mobile application which I had no experience in doing but relied solely on the output from chatGPT and other AI models. This project allowed me to see through the marketing fluff of AI and learn it true limitations. Two main issues I found were:


  • Often chatGPT would provide solutions that I knew from experience would work but would lead me down a "rabbit hole" which would be difficult to recover from or require drastic rework to fix. An example was loading fonts. This can be done with two lines of code however chatGPT provided a recommendation which required 27 lines of code across two files.
  • I became over dependent on chatGPT's solutions because my code was not stored in my short term memory. Mundane tasks became so difficult, that it became easier to ask chatGPT to resolve simple tasks for me. This created a very dangerous situation as chatGPT often did not have the right answers and I would incur more and more tech debt.

I opted to continue using chatGPT as a guide for recommendations only and not code. I built the magic storytime application which you can read about in the " Training and Professional Development " section.

I am currently pursuing my green belt certification in Lean Six Sigma with my employer Lockheed Martin. In this program I facilitate change management process in accordance to Lean Six Sigma principles. My role is to identify opportunities in current process, bring senior leadership and stakeholders together to measure and define efficiencies which would improve turn around time and reduce resource costs.

Learning Activity MetaData

I am on the steering committe for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Learning Activity Meta Data Standard (IEEE P2881). I collaborate with industry on a regular basis as we flesh out a data model which will be use to standardize data which we can capture in learning activities. Our goal is to standard this data so that learning activity and can be shared and sourced across multiple courses and industries.
