Gravel Crusher Operator/Groundsman Duties
-Maximized crushing production while minimizing both downtime and potential equipment damage through strict adherence to safe pre-start, shift change/end, and scheduled maintenance/repair routines
-Continually monitored crusher performance by regularly checking and recording output, adjusting feeder belt speed and/or tension and settings based on production requirements, while recording the stock quantities and qualities of various tools, lubricants, and supplies to ensure optimal performance and safety compliance.
-Conducted routine crusher maintenance with both hand and power tools (eg. come-alongs, 3/8" and 1/2" chains, ratchet boomers and straps, electric grinders and drills and drill press, hydraulic cone and jaw pumps, air compressors, Lincoln battery-operated grease guns, and Milwaukee battery-powered 1/2" and 3/4" impacts, drills, grinders, and flashlights) to ensure operational reliability.
-Assisted in training new crusher operators on equipment handling and safety procedures, including 2-way radio use, and on company policy of mandatory minimum of 2 shift member company call-ins per shift.
-Worked collaboratively with other team members and supervisors to ensure compliance with project projections and safety regulations, minimizing workplace hazards and risks while operating equipment, and maintaining clean and organized work area, and crew trucks.
-Adjusted conveyor belt take-ups and crusher feeder speed settings and changed screen sizes in 5' by 14', 6' by 16' and 6' by 20' cone and jaw screening plants based on material type, size, and product order size and priority requirements.
-Maintained accurate records for both shift and daily operational activities, hazard, production and downtime assessment logs, and equipment inspection and maintenance activities.
-Conducted regular maintenance checks on all crusher components, identifying potential problem or wear areas including: electric motors, dodge boxes, bearings and grease fittings, conveyor V-belts, belts, and belt scrapers, and frames, rollers, screens and screen hoppers, jaw and punch plates, jaw toggle spring bolts, cone mantles and liners, conveyor tail pulley hopper, belting, and flashing wear, conveyor head and tail pulley and shaft wear, and lubricant levels. I performed maintenance as time, materials, and priority required.
-Cleaned work areas around crushers in order to prevent gravel, dust, and snow build-up around tail pulleys, bearings, screw jack stands, wooden blocks, and ground-surface strung electric motor power cords, especially in colder temperatures, often working with propane torches and bottles in frosty and/or snowy conditions to maintain consistent conveyor belt operation and tracking
-Inspected material for size consistency both prior to and during feeding of material into crusher.
-Crusher equipment operated included JM, Terex, El-Russ and Cedarapids conveyors for product, elimination sand, and manufactured fines, Cedarapids 22" by 36" and larger Jaws and either Cones in 45" or 54", and El-Russ and Mormack stackers in either telescopic or non-telescopic guise, and in either manual and/or automated modes.
-Performed monthly conveyor dodge box oil checks, annual cone oil and filter changes, and annual cone and jaw screen oil changes, always checking for metal shavings, and correctly diagnosing the need for one cone screen drive side rebuild.
-Assisted with power van genset and Kawasaki 95 ZIV or ZV or John Deere equivalent loader oil changes every 250-300 operating hours completed.
-Assisted other personnel in moving boulders and wooden blocks away from the feeder frame impeding its removal during and after set-up and during equipment teardown, and also assisted in crusher set and clean-up, tear down, and transport, hauling Jaw and Cone plant blocks on 1/2 and 3/4 tonnes pick-ups, often acting as the crusher move pilot truck.
-Monitored equipment operations to ensure correct settings and proactively identify both potential and actual malfunctions, including rapid-fire crusher shutdowns to minimize and/or eliminate both potential material build-up and equipment damage.
-Discarded and broke up oversize clay lumps to minimize and/or avoid plugging 45" and 54" Cedarapids cones, using a crowbar, sledgehammer, and pails of rocky crushed materials.
-Provided assistance in equipment maintenance and repair, including daily greasing of 22" by 36" and larger Cedarapids Jaws, periodic screen, cone mantle and liner, jaw plate flip and toggle spring plate and jaw punch plate changes, as well as periodic jaw setting and near-daily cone settings, ensuring safe and proper readiness for daily operations.
-Followed all safety protocols while working on ladders and on/with scaffolding and man-lifts.
-Removed snow from and salted ice on office sidewalks and walkways.
-Enforced ground policies and regulations, ensuring a safe environment for gravel pit visitors and product testers, taking material samples for the latter.
