Volunteer Experience

Medical Clinic Set-up in Guatemala - September 2024 


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Integral part of a small interdisciplinary team that opened a new volunteer-run medical clinic in Antigua, Guatemala,
  • Provided local residents access to free and accessible medical care including initial assessment, care plans, treatment, and follow-up
  • Established baseline patient client medical records for future use in the clinic
  • Collaborated with local clinic administrative staff and other international medical volunteers to triage, assess, formulate and implement treatment plans for various conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, upper respiratory illness, and arthritis
  • Educated patient clients regarding healthcare conditions, causes and prevention of illness, treatment, medications, and signs and symptoms requiring immediate intervention to improve health literacy and facilitate health promotion with patients
  • Assessed efficacy of the initial treatment plan through follow up appointments, and made changes accordingly
  • As a bilingual volunteer, provided assessment, care, and treatment in Spanish
  • These volunteer efforts helped to establish the clinic as a key part of this remote communities healthcare system
