- After successfully passing mechanical testing (trouble shooting a 3 phase motor starter circuit and rebuilding a diaphragm pump by following the manual I was hired as a drum technician. My primary responsibilities include:
- Maintain Drum PM to ISO standards
- Trouble shoot, change, repair, drums, spindles, B.O.T.S and turn up bags (using proper lock out and tag out on machines and drums) sometimes having to operate fork lift, crane/hoist, milling machines, lathes, welders, drill presses for fabrication and repair.
- Respond to production ticket changes as required
- Keep accurate and detailed maintenance records
- Inspect parts and assemblies using micrometer, calipers, bore gauges and dial indicators.
- Read blueprints and schematics for drum rebuilds
- Maintain & Correct storeroom inventories, which includes alerting Material Control of potential outages and assist with managing other tire machine code sensitive equipment
- Maintain housekeeping of drum repair shop and storeroom
- Work on call, rotating days, nights, weekends, and holidays

- After successfully passing medical and aptitude testing I was flown to complete a 7 week CROR (Canadian Rail Operating Rules) course at the CN campus in Winnipeg. I successfully passed 4 exams 1 signal exam requiring 100% to pass and 3 CROR exams requiring 80% to pass. I then had another 6 months of OJT before doing a qualifying test to become a conductor. My daily responsibilities include the following:
- Adhering to all yard master train orders
- Obeying all railroad signals and safety procedures. Safety is always the top priority when working with around trains.
- Assembling/disassembling rail cars in the rail yard which is done by a remote control belt pack to drive the main train engine
- Picking up and delivering rail cars while on the main route
- Processing oral and printed information concerning the movement of rail cars along with instruction from other crew working in the yard and the yard master/RTC (Radio Traffic Control Centre)
- Operating switches which most require proper lock out to make sure the switch can’t be reversed until the conductor is finished working.
- Walking for extended periods of time in all weather conditions during a shift.
- Working on a spare board being on call 24 hours of the day 7 days a week.
