Wood working / Rope splicing

I've been involved in wood working since high school.  Building several different pieces of furniture for my home: shelving, hutch, racks... At work, I'm involved in building animal habitats using different types of wood material.  I've built wooden benches for guests and donors, signs (also out of wood) I've also made bowls of different type of woods .


Rope Splicing is one of my passions. I've been rope splicing for 15yrs.  I've been quite successful on a type of, rope splice technique, where I've created a page on social media called,  SO-CAL Splice. 

Additional Information

In 1978, I was hired as a part time, seasonal employee at the "Wild Animal Park" thru the "CITA" program when I was 17yrs of age, thru the end of 1979. During the 2 yrs as a part time employee, I worked as a Gardner/ Irrigation, also helped several different departments including, Food Service, The Receiving Warehouse and Animal Care.

In 1980, I was hired to full time in the, Horticulture Department. My role was, a floating gardner, going and helping different teams, including... tree planting, irrigation installation, landscaping, heavy equipment operator : (back hoe, bobcat, spade truck, D5 Cat, cement truck, trencher, knuckle boom).


  • I was given the opportunity to be involved in 18 different expeditions from... Ensenada, Mexico to the tip of Baja, which is, Cabo San Lucas, collecting plants for the Wild Animal Parks, Baja Garden. Plants that are only found in the Baja area. Plants collected were.... A variety of the Barrel Catus, Blue Mexican Fig trees, Boojum Tree, Saguaro, Dudleya, a Tecate Cypress tree seed collection, Blue Hesper palm seed collection, our famous Cordon collection and many more Baja plants.
  • In 1981, I worked at the San Diego Zoo for 1 yr. working with Danny Simpson and the tree crew, learning the basics of tree care that was available back then. I was trained in doing crane work, rigging, bucket truck and being a bobcat skidder operator, chainsaw maintenance and the safe operation of a chipper.
  • In 1982, At the Wild Animal Park, I became the first tree trimmer for the Horticulture Department
  • In 1987, I Became the Lead Tree Trimmer
  • I'm a Certified Arborist WE-6682AT, Certified Tree Climber Specialist WE-6682AT, Certified CTSP # 00514, TCIA instructor #81294, Industrial Tower Climber & Rescue #1260356, First Aid / CPR /AED Instructor, and the President of the UTCA (United Tree Climbers Association).
  • I've spoken at different seminars and trade show events, including the following.... PTCA in San Diego, LA Arboretum, Sonoma State University for the TCIA, CRUXS training in Oregon, Seattle and in Sacramento, Grangetto's seminar at the Wild Animal Park and I will be speaking April 29th thru May 2 this year, at the 90th Annual WCISA conference in San Diego.
  • I've competed in several different tree competitions. However, recently, I retired from competing, and now, I'm a judge at these events .
  • 1990, I became the Safety Rep for the Horticulture Dept. and currently, I am the SDZWA EHS Rep for our department .
